Darkane did a tunnel like that on their last album.

And why does In Flames last few albums sound like shit? everthing sounds so over eq'd and lifeless.
you know i gave one of their new ones another go the other day and I came to the conclusion that they're actually using cardboard boxes in place of kick drums, and the guitars are simply the patch "electric guitar" on an old 80s Korg keyboard.

Wow - what a great way to make your first post... bringing up an old thread with a dumbass comment? LOL

dumbass comment? I dont really care if the tread is old regarding Daniel Svensson´s drumming. Here we are talking about drumsound and sound in general, right? And i know Daniel Bergstrand had a living hell recording the In Flames drums, 1 example of that: Daniel Svensson were not able to hit a decent rimshot on the first 2 albums recorded at Dug Out, try to make a good sound of that without triggers (modules) and shit!
And please, do you really think i care if this is my first post or my 100th?

Bottom trigger too. Wow that's interesting. I like this setup. This was a great sounding album, I thought.

The bottom and the overhead trigger is just used as a regular mic. He just takes the signal/sound from the triggers and blend them with the other mics , but i guess you figure that out already :goggly:
The bottom trigger mic sounds quite intresting actually, blended with the other under mic it creates a really nice sound from the snares.

is recording in a corner like that a bad thing???

My drummer thinks stabing the drama is the best drum sound ever and just loves it! Was this the pic from recording that album??

Someone posted a article about this micing technique! I try to explain it from my memory:

The second mic stands there where the pressure of the "low end wave"
has the most pressure! Theats 1/4 wavelength away from the drum! For 40Hz this gives: (300m/s)/(40Hz)/4 = 1.87500 meters

I'm confused?

does that have something to do with being in a corner?

I'm just wondering if thats how they recorded to get stabbing the drama drums like that.

and also what + and - come from recording drums in a corner like that?

normally drums aren't recorded in corners because the reflections from the perpendicular walls fuck up the whole thing. But he's got all of the cymbals mic'ed, plus the overheads are low as shit, so it doesn't really matter because the mics are too close to pick up the reflections. If you don't know a lot about acoustics and mic placement, I wouldn't recommend trying this at home.

Yes they recorded the stabbing the drama drums like that.

im just gonna say

i dont think anyone is going to learn how to get stabbing the drama drum sounds from this picture...

i can almost gaurantee there was probably tons of outboard gear and eq and compression used on all of the channels. nothing new, just mic's in front of drums. you could have a perfect room, or a crappy one, you're still gonna need to shift a lot of things around to make it sound like anything modern these days.

if you want the who sound or something, thats easy, mic it up and hit record.

yea i just wanted to know if that was serious they recorded drums in corner like that.
Yea they got a Sweet sound but i hope they used some kinda gear or samples or something i don't think anyone just records drums and wala its perfect!!!!!

they were not using any samples for the drums on Stabbing the drama, basic gear was used.

No not anyone cant get that sound, but the right man with ears and skills can get that sound :goggly:

Triggers on the snare are used for gating : he uses them sidechained with the noise gates.
I think Daniel uses samples in addition of the real snare too.

The tunnel is there to get some more low end from the bass drum.
He tries to isolate the cymbals from the rest of the kit with that micing technique, I think it worked great on that album. The room seems to sound very "live" and agressive, as heard on his recordings.

There's a Royer R121 on the hats too ;) (it's great there)

Triggers on the snare is NOT used with noisegates, he only uses the sound from the trigger mic direct into the mixing desk.
Daniel didnt use any samples on that album and regarding the tunnel is used only for isolation of the kickdrum nothing else. The room he got for recording drums is like u said live and agressive with no damping in it, he likes it that way.

ive got a question about the tunnel techinique, what kind of mics would you want to use? in my case i have a beta52 would that be palced in the kick drum and then another dynamic mic at the end of the tunnel or a condensor or what?

Good question. I always assumed it was a subkick would work in there but I've never been able to have a tunnel, or a subkick. :D

Early reflections from recording in a corner aren't a huge concern if you want a slap-backy sound. The reason why they are most likely in a corner is because low end will typically "build up" in corners giving an extremely hyped low end response. Hence, the reason bass traps are put across corners. In this case it appears they are attempting to use that hyped low end to add girth to their drum tracks.
