Solid state w/ no load on speakers.

I've always been told that when running an amp without a load, the risks that apply to tube amps do not apply to solid state amps.

Thanks alot everyone.

I almost felt this was an ultra newb question, but after hours of sifting threads I decided to go out on a limb and make my first post this one. I needed a definitive answer before I started plugging things in.

I was bracing myself for getting flamed real good about this but you guys are great. Thanks again.

I've done this with a Mode Four, and it survived. But it's not going to sound good without a cab

I wanted to try using cab impulses with the head as a source of gain. And you are definitely right...it sounded like crap. For some reason I get better results from my multi effects processor. Then again I had no 808 or 820 in front helping things out either.

Yes, but the idea is to use impulses, not just record the straight signal from the amp.

Generally, using impulses should produce a sound similar to your mic'd cab, if you're doing it correctly.
