Living in an apartment means I can't be blasting stuff away at any sort of volume, so I need a decent set of semi-pro headphones for monitoring purposes. I appreciate it's not going to be as good as real monitors, but I'm only laying some stuff down for the fun of it.

So. Any recommendations that won't break the bank?

I have some Sennheiser HD 600's I use for mastering and tracking. They are incredible. Open back so they dont have pumping bass but they go low. I did a mix once where I trusted the headphones alone and it turned out to be a disaster though. Dont do that.

Those are nice cans! Sennheiser discounted them since the 650's are out, but at $350 I still can't justify buying them.

Personally I like and use the Senn HD-580 model which was the precursor to the HD-600 for listening and headphone monitoring. The Senn HD-280 Pro are great sealed cans for tracking stuff... not nearly as killer as the HD-580 or HD-600, but they keep headphone bleed from getting into your mic when recording vox or acoustic or whatever.

Good luck,
Jeff
