Is that their drummer always do the SAME damn thing on almost each song!! You guys know what I'm talking about?

Tom Hunting's trademark drumbeat is that tight as fuck bass drum triplets countertimed with a basic 1-2 type beat at a fast pace...

He used this pattern on War Is My Sheppard throughout the song, on Scar Spangled Banner in some parts and also on Fabulous Disaster...

But being a well-schooled Exodus fan, I assure you that Tom Hunting is very inventive... Listen to Toxic Waltz and listen to the fills... Listen to Cajun Hell or Brain Dead. Or his most chaotic Chemikill

Thx larf, that's what I wanted to explain but didn't know how. He also uses his drum triplets on Pirahna.

typically, thrash metal does that. not saying that death metal doesnt... just theres alot of unoriginality

calling it unroginiality is a bit excessive... It's really just a style. Like you said, the term unoriginality could be used for death metal also since it consist mostly of helicopter propeller speed bass drum with occasionnal blast beats and grinds... But then you have some very talented drummers who plays certain kind of fills and have "it" ...

When it comes to thrash, the main focus is the dynamics and the energy of the rhythm. Rhythm Guitars and Drum patterns will, most of the time, be simple, in your face, fast beats with plenty of hooks and punches... It all really comes down to the style!

It's also worth comparing time periods. Tempesta's drumming on Low is a lot more interesting than anything Clemente did, but for how long do you think Clemente had been playing when they first started (I know you were talking Exodus specifically, but it is the same for many bands, and many started at similarly young ages).

You're right. Still, Lombardo, who is considered to be "old" for a drummer, has a very interesting style and varies a lot on the songs he plays.

Tempo of the Damned is a really good album, comeback aside. Being "spoiled" by progresssive and goth/power metal, I am still highly entertained by this album. Some thrash is pretty blatantly repetitive, which led to the demise of the genre, but the ones that lasted were the ones that innovated. Kreator came back with Enemy of God. Ventor really isn't repetitive. He's powerful and has certainly gotten better over time.

Lombardo is a signature player. He is different in the realm of thrash, as is Paul Bostaph. In my opinion, while Slayer's music has stagnated and gone as far as it could go many years ago, Dave was always capable of more than what their writing would allow. He was controlled on Testament's The Gathering, but you knew he was changing things up and you knew it was him.

Paul Bostaph's drumming the first two Forbidden's is some of the best thrash drumming ever.

Wow, that's the first worthwhile thing The Greys has EVER said.

Louie Clemente's drumming on the first two Testament albums was pretty meh, even for the standards of the time. Compared to the shit guys like Bostaph, Lombardo & Rat Skates were doing...shit, even Lars Ulrich was more interesting. To say nothing of Andy fucking Galeon, who at 15 years old was absolutely tearing shit up.

dude... wasn't Andy Galeon 14 when he recorded the first DA demo????

This is my new favorite thread. Yeah Testaments first two albums I actually didnt much attention to the drumming because like many said earlier its all about rythmn guitars. I love Piranaha though. Fabulous Disaster is rythmically one of my favorite Exodus songs vocal wise, just with the empathsis on certain words in the chorus. I really liked Lombardos stuff on The Gathering and grabbed my attention much more than just about anything he did with Slayer. Of course i think slayer were and still are overrated. I must say I never heard Andy Galeons stuff so that is something I definetly will look into. I know its not really thrash but same era , but anyway I always liked Mikkey Dees cymbal work on Abigail. I know its nothing outstanding but I think it was just very well placed. I guess its really all just preference of style of sound.Actually made a new thrash/oldschool metal compilation the other day for driving purposes on my headphones ( no cdplayer). I had an old one but revised it with a few new choices.Tell me what you think. It came to be about 79 minutes on an 80 minute cd.

1.Motorbreath /Metallica
2.Elimination/ Overkill
3.Medusa/ Anthrax
4.Equal rights/ Nuclear Assault
5.In My Darkest hour/ Megadeth
6.Murder/Helloween
7.COTLOD/Testament
8.Nuclear Winter/ Sodom
9.Cemetary Gates/Pantera
10.I Live You Die/ Flotsam And Jetsam
11. Scavenger Of Human Sorrow/ Death
12.Raining Blood/ Slayer
13.Arrival/King Diamond
14. Piranah / Exodus
15.Regin Of Fire/ Armored Saint

Any band as big as Slayer is overrated. I still love Show No Mercy.
