Sonata Arctica

I can see that this is a very old topic indeed! Reckoning Night was an execellent album though, but what about Stones Grow her Name and the two albums that predated the soon to be released record? Does anyone else feel that sonata has somehow fallen from grace? I know I am not the only one who thinks so... Anyways they were my favourate band of all time at one point. That is, until the days of greys came out. I think Teocracy has out grown the likes of Sonata Arctica. Perhaps Tony could learn a thing or two from them.
...knock some sense into that man's head again...

It all depends on whether or not you like the stylistic turn they took. There's no doubt many (most?) fans of their classic, fast power metal style were disappointed. While I love the old stuff, I found myself very pleasantly surprised with the turn they took (and this is coming from someone who considered Sonata their favorite band of the genre before Unia). While it took a long time for me to understand the change and get used to it, Unia eventually became my favorite Sonata album. I never tire of listening to it.

I've talked to Tony several times about why the change and it simply comes down to this: they were bored playing that same style over and over. I get the sense that if they hadn't experimented with new styles, they'd have disbanded, because they were creatively bored with it.

Also, I'm quite sure Matt (as great as we all think he is) would be embarrassed by the suggestion that Tony should learn a thing or two from him :err:

Welcome to the Theocracy board! :headbang:

I actually thought Unia was a logical progression from Reckoning Night. I understand it was a "grower" for a lot of SA fans, but I liked it immediately. Maybe it helped that I bought the 1st four SA albums around the same time, so I could hear the direction they were headed. Each album by Sonata Arctica seems to be a little bit different from the last, but also retains some of the same sound as well. It'd be pretty hard for me to pick a favorite album by them, but I like their last two albums as much as anything else they've ever done.
