Sonnox Introducing Mastering Plug-In at NAMM

"The new Sonnox Fraunhofer Pro-Codec plug-in is a mastering solution that makes it possible for the first time to precisely audition codecs in real time."

Now all they need is a plugin to magically transport me to my car to hear the mix. :D

Talk about killing the industry

What?? Hardly - this enables mixers/mastering engineers to much more easily produce the best mix possible in each format. If anything, it's going to increase the audio fidelity of lossy files by ensuring that the mix is as good as it can possibly be, rather than having it be stellar in .wav but suffer when brought down - now it can rule on both (as much as it can, given the formats limitations, that is), with a bit of tweaking and quick referencing via this plugin.

Yeah, who needs in advancements in better sounding codecs - when we can just make our lossy formats sound not AS awful :tickled:

Completely different argument; this is about maximizing the fidelity of our current situation, not stunting growth of lossless codec development.

The only people who buy this are going to be people who generally care about fidelity, especially across multiple platforms - they aren't marketing this at bedroom users who can't hear the difference between 192kbps mp3 and a .wav file.

Sweet.. But I wish they'd make their plugs more attractive.. Ugliest GUI's ever.

It looks just like the interface on a Sony Oxford console. You should be so lucky as to experience that "ugly."
I agree 100% with Jeff in the argument above. Some of us also work in games which have been compressed forever and this will be a really valuable tool for that in addition to it's music and sync applications.

'Mainstream' mastering engineers (for example, the guys at Sterling Sound, NY) wouldn't rely on the digital domain as much as we do. That's what I meant. Sorry for not making my self clear. Cheers!
