Son's of Northern Darkness

immortal is too often mentioned, very overrated and frankly, not very good past "at the heart of winter" which i still feel is a very flimsy and shallow album of "catchiness" without much heart or feel on it. it feels like iron maiden got ahold of some corpse paint and shacked up in a lodge in the norwegian mountains while they recorded.

immortal next to emperor is simply a gateway black metal band which gets more hype than they really deserve imo due to their accessibility. dont get me wrong, their first handful of albums were quite decent and important for the development for the genre...but sons of northern darkness? good god what an awful album. damned in black being probably even worse. and i almost forgot to mention the typically awful "popeye" vocals. and i could put up with MOST average extreme metal vocalists without batting an eye.

Immortal rules. Sons of Northern Darkness and At the Heart of Winter are two of the best metal albums ever.

Pure Holocaust is rather standard early black metal, but for me it is definitely the most interesting release by Immortal. It's got a special vibe to it that only occasioanlly surfaces on the other albums. Sons of Northern Darkness has some pretty good moments (the last song especially), but I doubt it is really all that special. I still think it is their best after Blizzard Beasts.
I wish Immortal weren't such clowns, though. It's just embarassing to admit liking them even a little.

haha, all true statements. and i share the pure holocaust sentiment. its cold as shit, pretty unique atmosphere for fairly standard (although well executed) musicality at that juncture.
