Im so sick of lending the small amount of time between 2 jobs and college plus a band to people for me to do EP's, demos, and all recordings to have selfish dickheads leave my studio in absolute mess, piles of guitar strings, old drum heads, rubbish, food containers, gaff tape.

How can people feel comfortable wheeling in their guitar rig/ drum kit do their recording then leave me to spend hours cleaning up their mess after a 5 r 6 hour session of me recording their horrible, out of time drumming.

I dunno, mayby im being an old woman, but it just makes me feel like ending it and stopping recording for people.

So Give me a "Production Tip".....

How the Fuck do you get Assholes to clean up after themselfs???

Put signs up.. and tell them to clean up their shit.. they won't do it if they're not asked to.
They don't pay you to clean but to record their CD.
Before they leave the session, remind them to clean the mess they left behind..

Ask them to clean up after themselfs? Seriously just ask them they are probably so exciting about recording that they forget their manors and dont clean up after themselfs. If you ask and they still dont clean up after themselfes then they dont respect you and its time to hover that finger over the delete key:Smokedev:

"Hey guys, I'm gonna have to charge you an extra half-day"

"Why? We're done, aren't we?"

"You're done tracking, but I'm gonna have to clean up your crap, and it's gonna take me a half-day, so I have to charge you guys since it's time I take away from working with someone else. Or you could give me a hand..."

See how that works...

Put a sign saying that if the band leave trash behind they´ll be charged. Then you won´t sound a prick as, you know, it´s written on that sign, you can´t do nothing about it... It´s the rules : P

yea dude, definitely put a sign stating that there'll be a charge for cleaning up - and put it on the door that they have to use to leave...also mention that they won't get their copy of the mixes until all charges are paid in full - including cleaning

i find it also helps to have your space really clean when people get there...i never run a session with a messy control room/studio, unless it's something i'm doing with close friends/family. if they walk into a neat, clean, organized space, they'll instantly be under the impression that that's how you do shit.

thats what i would have thought. Im the type of person who prefers working in a clean area.

I've gone to sleep and woken up again since i posted that, so ive calmed down now. I always insist that people clean their shit up, and i do it strongly. But people just ignore it. I suppose theres only so much you can do and i guess you have to expect that you will get mess after having people in your studio, its just frustrating and feels extremely disrespectful..

thanks for the comments guys haha

I second that. I'm also in favor of taking the session files hostage under threat of deletion. This very wise man once told me ... 'You act like a bitch, I'm gonna treat you like a bitch'. I think it was Easy E or someone. Anyway, it's sound logic. Puns intended.

Don't do any edits, leave all the guitar rakes, hums, bips and sounds in between vocals lines and tell them "Hey guys, if you arent going to clean up, I won't".

Or give them the CD with the metronome track still on and tell them that the click track will disapear with the food, strings, heads etc...

This is great hahaha

I find that if you ask, you'll receive. Just say at the end of the day, "Hey guys, can we clean this up a bit?" I've found this method to always work.

Remember, you're dealing with people who can't remember where beat four is, or how a song is arranged, or how to tune an instrument. What makes you think they're going to remember to clean up after themselves? :)

even better...just record yourself during some breakdown yelling "WE DON'T KNOW HOW TO CLEAN UP AFTER OUR FUCKING SELVES!!!!!"

seems most people have hit the nail on the head.!!
ask nicely, and if they dont do it; do it during session time not after, they'll soon get the picture

ask for more money before doing the job and tell them they'll get it cheaper if they clean-up for themselves. with extra money go for a cleaning lady or do it yourself and keep it.
