I have fallen head over heels in love with this band, vocal harmonies, the production, sparse piano sections, the guitar solos, the lyrics...this is spiritual music.

No band has stirred me in quite this way for sometime, I would like to gauge some opinions of this frankly remarkable band, and be recommended music similar to it.

I tried Pandora, it turned up Margot and the Nuclear So and So's, Snowglobe, The Tangent and Emerson, Lake and Palmer (ELP). 'Margot' were good and ELP I listen to, however none of them seemed too similar.

Anyone?

Spock's Beard is pretty damn lame imho, I hate their clonky bass tone and uber-bland vocals. If you are listening to their albums like V and Snow and earlier, then I'd say check out Transatlantic and Neal Morse's last two cds (his first two were apparently terrible even to Spock's Beard fans, but Testimony and the newer one are allegedly good). Transatlantic is Neal Morse, Roine Stolt (Flower Kings singer/songwriter/guitarist), Mike Portnoy, and the bassist
from Marillion, but basically end up sounding the same as Spock's Beard. Most of my spocks beard-loving friends think Transatlantic is slightly better, though, so if you like Spock's Beard I'm sure you'll love them.

If you've only been listening to their last two albums (Octane and...the one with the rainbow trout on the front), they sound way different since they have a different singer/songwriter. Most of my friends that worshipped Spock's Beard are VERY lukewarm towards them, so I can only assume the earlier ones are much better. Since I haven't heard them, I can't give you any suggestions for stuff that sounds like them, but you should definitely go for the earlier material. Check out V for sure, I think that's generally the fan favorite. "Snow" is particularly heinous imo and divided their fanbase (some think it's their best, others think it was their worst up to that point). If you're looking for christian music or whatever then stick with Snow/V/Neal Morse's recent solo junk. :PPPPPPP

How helpful. No, I need more music like this, so if you've nothing to contribute to the thread don't bother.
great stuff. even after neal left, they're still pretty strong as a group. similar artists? try enchant or arena.

btw the tangent's 1st album slays

pain of salvation

Spock's Beard fans tend to hate pain of salvation as pain of salvation doesn't make gay flower music and deals with issues of things like *gasp* sex! Give them some annoying vintage keyboards and clonky bass and maybe they'd appreciate them a bit more. ;_; Or maybe they'd like "Be."

it's too bad you think they suck cause PoS is always a good recommendation. unless their next album blows.

They're a good recommendation in general, but they're not really similar to spock's beard, he might as well have recommended opeth. GLASS HAMMER and fruits of that ilk are probably better.
