SS amp with a TS ?

I don't see why not dude. If its meant to model the real amp, then both of those will sound great with a TS in front. Just try it, if it sounds good, use it, if not, don't.

+1, throwing all the ODs and distortions in front of a new amp is one of the first things I do when I get it. Especially the TS7 and the RAT with very low distortion have sounded good on almost everything I've tried; SS and emulation amps included.

Worst case: The amp might not respond to a TS pushing it with more volume, but the distortion on the TS will still add to the amp's distortion.

Do you think micing a small amp like the 40XL is better than using a 4X12 in a house ? (small medium room)

Not if the head sitting on top of it is a good one.

The 40XL is a cool little practice amp, but I'd rather just DI and use a plugin amp sim.
