ssl

*bump*

i´m also very intersted in this preamp

basically, is it worth a buy?
my currently preamps are from my mackie onyx 1620,

it seems that the "better" ones (api, neve, etc) all costs at least twice as much
so, i´m a bit unsure about it..
2.5k for a preamp is much money (for me, at least) , so a 4channel preamp for 1k sounds like a bargain.. but if the quality is not worth its a no-go

best wishes

They are good for one thing... "yeah, my studio has ssl in it"

Although stupid, its a valid point if you work on a commercial basis, if not then who gives a shit.

While I can't say anything about that particular SSL preamp, I want to say that SSL pre's are considerably better then most people think. I'd use an SSL pre long before I touched a UA or Focusrite or almost any other pre. I'm going to be in my studio today so perhaps I'll do a API VS. NEVE VS. SSl shootout if I get the time.

thanks for all your replys!! i got the point ;)

its for my private home studio only, so not commercial, the name doesnt matters, but quality...and cost/performance ratio.

I'd go for Universal Audio, they sound fantastic <3
thanks for pointing out that,
you mean something like the this

I never think to buy an ssl pre only to tell my clients I have the ssl, but for the price, it has 4 channel for 1000 euros.....

thanks BlackestEyes
on the ssl homepage they claim that the vhd pres are built on the same spec/circuits then the duality pres,
so your positive experience gives me some good mood :)

but i just discovered this:
API Lunchbox
http://www.apiaudio.com/5006b.html

then i could get at least 1x512 + lunchbox and i dont have to sell my kidney :)
and later, i can upgrade anytime when i have saved more money!!

cheers

A firend of mine has the predecessor of this one: http://www.thomann.de/de/universal_audio_la610_mkii.htm
And it is awesome, he does only Vocals but i'm sure you could use it for nearly anything.
The "solo 610" should be similiar, but i have never heard it.

I just realized you asked for a 4 channel preamp (?) :D sorry..

thank you
4channels are not necessary yet, one or two channels are sufficient for me at the moment.
but of course to have a quality 4channel micpre for a low cost would be smashing, but at the end.. i´m also willing to pay the same amount to have 1 or 2 channels but a quality that i can rely on.

i´m glad about any tips or recommendations!!

cheers

I share your thoughts on the lunchbox.
My student days are finally over and now I can start making some $$$ and a lunchbox with at least one 512c is on the top of my to-get list

DUDE - the API Lunchbox is the greatest concept ever, you can get modules for it from Shadow Hills, A-designs, API (obviously :D), Chandler, Purple Audio, Great River - basically, more than enough selection to cover every need you might have, and you only have to pay for a power supply once! (meaning, in the lunchbox)

the 610 preamps are sweet as all hell, but something to consider is that they aren't all that versatile. there's certain applications where they'll shine, and others where you'll be left doing one of these: :erk:

I just finished putting together a lunchbox going into a RME Fireface for a friend's studio. We put a Great River and an API512c. Totally awesome Pre's man, and a killer way to have a nice variety of Pre-amps since, like mic's, they all have different characters. I'm sold!

For my own personal studio, I just built some Seventh Circle Audio Pre's. I put a pair of a12's and N72's and a T15. Really nice sounding pre's as well! Good variety, but not as much as the API lunchbox. But for the money, they are high end pre's at half the cost, plus building them is pretty fun, but time consuming.

Had a few things come up. I'm going to try and do it tomorrow, but more likely friday.
no hurry about it, but many thanks in advance

yeah, i thought this too :))))))

and the good thing too is, that the power supply works at 100V and 220V, so i can use it all around the world and dont have to buy it new when we move to my wifes home canada in a few years!!! :)))
