Standalone VST Plugin Player?

Is there any software that would allow me to simply play VST instruments in real time without all of the extra features of recording and mixing etc? I basically want to play virtual instruments from my laptop using a midi controller, but not for the purpose of recording, is there any way to do this, or do I have to do it through an elaborate program like Cubase? Thanks for any help.
