Stands or clamps for toms?

Well, which of the two do you guys prefer when micing drums?

Of course clamps are a lot more convenient for many reasons, but I have heard a lot of discussion about stands being superior for tonal reasons?

Discuss my friends.

Stands when recording, clamps when mixing live

When using a clamp you will get some resonance from the tom to the mic. And you can't place the mic freely.
But in a live situation you will save space and avoid the stage vibrations from getting to the mics.

Huomasin vasta postattuani että puhut luultavasti suomea =)

I've recorded with clips- They're good when you don't have the stands or space and i've yet to have a problem with resonances and stuff as I gate or else maunally adjust the volume so there's no sound when the drums not being hit.
Placement can be a bitch though- I often go with a mic stand on the snare top for that very reason alone- toms are usually ok, it depends on where their cymbals are really

Yep, thanks guys for the info!

I have always used stands, but since musicians are often clumsy bastards and bumb into the stands etc., I was thinking of buying some clamps. But well, I think I'll stick to my guns and stay with my stands.

SoundSpiral, ei tällä palstalla tunnu kyllä Suomalaisita olevan pulaa! :kickass:

use stands whenever possible, even if it seems impossible. (recording only, the previous advice about stage set up was dead on)

clamps add extra weight to shells which can pull a drum out of tune, and the vibration in the mic from each hit to a drum with a clamped mic on it just sounds awful. if cymbals are in the way, raise them or swivel them. drummers can be picky and bitchy, but if you force them to adapt to little changes for the good of the recording, you'll find that you'll be much more pleased with the results. also, mics on clamps will begin to move around from vibrating, causing inconsistencies in takes, because the mic will be pointing at a different point of the head after a short time.

keep the clamps at the venue and buy lots of sturdy tight locking stands for the studio :)

I used to use stands only for the above mentioned reasons....
then I started using clips on some projects and and practice everything was fine, so I thought "screw the theory" and went with clamps all the time ;) (for racktoms only though)
