How did they do this? Every time I've heard a live band's DVD with one guitarist, its either panned to one side, or its stereo but really bad sounding, frequencies spread out left-to-right because, obviously, its only the one take (ie. DT's Chaos in Motion).

Just heard this: http://ie.7digital.com/artists/nightwish/made-in-hong-kong-and-in-various-other-places/

New Nightwish DVD samples, they've only got one guitarist but its stereo. Not hardpanned, but stereo nonetheless, and it sounds good. Any idea how they did this?

edit: just heard some harmonies, wtf. They do use a lot of samples from the actual CDs in their live performance, so they obviously play to a click and could have just put the studio tracks in I guess.

A lot of engineers take one guitar track and put a medium length stereo delay on it, with 100% affected in one channel and 0% in the other... Not too long of a delay because things start sounding weird... but if you get it right, it will sound great.
