I've been telling some mates recently how good Opeth are, and the ones who just can't see past the aggressive vocals (because, y'know, god forbid you might have to put a bit of effort into listening to the song) really piss me off.. so I just throw this song at them and go "Here, listen to this and shut the fuck up".

Yeah, that is always a problem. In our school, you're considered to be kinda alien if you listen to complex, pretentious music. And you can't say you listen to Metal without being confronted with prejudices like "Oh, something like Linkin Park?" or "Are you a satanist?" 0_o

Fuck it I have gave up trying to get people into opeth, they expect pure death metal(all my friends) or it is shit.
And when a real mellow acoustic part comes on they call opeth pussies.
I gave up, now I just listen to opeth by myself, it would be nice to discuss albums with people face to face and not over the net. But ahwell, they are missing out so fuck them.

the good thing for me is that all of my best friends are into opeth heavily and everything else that i enjoy, Tool, Hum, 311 etc. so we often have "night-toke-tours" in one car and just blare an opeth album like high goblins...it's a good time..oh yes..a good time... and actually i think ive gotten a good number of people into opeth including girls and my mother even haha, shes not to fond of the screaming but when i played it shes like...oh yea this sounds like the moody blues, shes a prog rock mom
I'm quite lucky, while I do come across a bunch of dickheads regarding Opeth, I've managed to get at least three or four people into Opeth, and I can discuss Opeth with them. Also, I'm a DJ at a pub on a Saturday night, and I play what I want, and if I want to play Opeth, that means they have to listen to it, and tough shit if they don't like it. 
But, it's true, there's so much narrow-mindedness when it comes to Metal, it makes me want to throttle someone (although, of course, if I did that, it'd be blamed on the music and I'd be pegged as a Marilyn Manson fan).

Gee don't even mention it... just had a huge discussion on the Lacuna Coil mailing list... some asshole started bad mouthing Opeth... he was pissed off cuz Opeth was headlining the tour... fucking asshole.
Hmm the so called metal heads at my school only like metal if it is fast and extremely heavy(pantera, dying fetus, immolation, cannibal corpse)
They are all great bands except I dont like pantera that much, but they call opeth shit because they have to let the music grow on them. All they like is catchy riffs.

hehehee.. Im on the Lacuna Coil mailing list as well.. I dont understand it with some people sometimes. I have gotten a few of my friends into Opeth, starting with the more mellow stuff, mixing in the growls and clean songs, now all of them are going with me to the show when they play here in Cali. Not to mention that Ive gotten them into a lot of other bands as well.. So its kinda nice to actually be able to discuss Opeth and other bands in general with some of my friends and not have them scoff at me like people used to when I would bring up metal ;-)

Honestly I have to argue with people to convince them that there is such a thing as progressive music. Music that doesnt follow simple patterns.

The thing is opeth is the band that really got me into extreme types of metal like black, death.
And I used to hate the signing and would sit through it intill the mellow parts,
Then one day I just started loving it.

Pink Floyd(once my fav band) did nothing for me. I was listening to it, and I just turned it off.

Have I lost an important point.....why do you always "have to turn people into Opeth"?
I sometimes get the impression that this is the most important thing with their music; to get all other (ignorant) people into it. Is there a point to turn as many people as possible into this band? You know it won't work, and for me it sounds like you are preaching too much. Let people listen, and if they like it: great, but if not: let them suffer.... Don't care if they tell you that it sucks or that they don't like it. It shouldn't make any difference for you anyway. Opeth will never be for everyone, the growling vocals and the heavy guitars will for sure turn a lot of people off.....

It never occured to you that they might just not like it? It's not like there's a law or some shit that you have to like certain music. Everybody is different, so why call them ignorant/prejudiced?
I think drum n' bass is the only genre I can say that I 100% don't like, but that doesn't mean I'm ignorant/prejudiced. A friend of mine listens to that crap all the time, so I've heard millions of songs of that shit and I've really tried to see if there was anything that appealed to me, but there wasn't (except one song, which I then bought, heard it 5-10 times and then never listened to it again).
If anybody is ignorant, it's the people who can't understand that people may not like Opeth or some other shit for that matter for some reason or another. As you've probably heard me say 3.000 times before: Everybody has different taste!
But I guess all this was just a repeat of groteZk's post.
Yes, that's very true. I can understand that. The only time it really annoys me is when, and I'm using one particular person I know as this frame of reference, they just blatantly dismiss it on the basis of one thing. Namely, the vocals. I sent this one guy "Bleak" and he dismissed it immediately once it got to the vocals. I said "Listen to the entire thing, listen to the *music*". He was like "No, it sucks". That's what annoys me. Wouldn't even listen to the rest of the song.
