Still day beneath the sun...

Exactly. People who like Opeth and think that everyone else should get into it so they may be 'enlightened from their ignorance' are themselves ignorant to an extent and should learn that everyone has different tastes.

However, to me, this does not compare to the EXTREME ignorance that many people have towards Opeth and metal in general. My friends are the prime example, they listen to drum and bass, and although they haven't really done it lately, they used to constantly make jokes towards Opeth and say they are a piece of shit. They used to mock me and think I was trying to be a 'metal poser' or some shit because they could not understand why I suddenly seemed to like a band that had growls. When it comes to metal music, my friends are COMPLETELY IGNORANT FUCKS. Then again...so many are what with metal being somewhat of a underappreciated genre in this electronic bullshit age of music.

Whats further...they mock me for liking growled metal...and yet they don't realise how diverse the world of metal is even just within the bands that use growls...from Agalloch, to Dark Tranquility, to Maudlin of the Well...they think EVERY growling metal band is just like Cannibal Corpse or Deicide. Fuck that. That is ignorance.

I think that's what most people are trying to get at. It's true, cause I was the same at one point. I criticized (criticized, not made fun of) metal cause I didn't really know how diverse it was. Then my best made said: "Look, listen to this..." and he played me some early 'tallica, Pantera, suchlike. I was like "Wow, this is pretty good.." so I went out and bought a couple of Pantera albums, a couple of Metallica.. and it went on from there, and now my taste is spread across the whole spectrum of metal and rock. So it just goes to show, don't knock something till you've tried it.

People are just ignorant that's all.

Fuck it I have gave up trying to get people into opeth, they expect pure death metal(all my friends) or it is shit.

People are ignorant...followed by terrible grammar.....hmmm......

I refuse to even bother trying to get people into anything out of the mainstream unless I can tell they're passionate enough about music to know something good when they hear it. One of my friends in high school was into a lot of standard prog like Dream Theater and stuff like The Smashing Pumpkins. I burned Blackwater Park and it almost immediately became one of his favorite CD's. Another friend is into the good mainstream rock, like Coldplay and Days Of The New and stuff. Sent him Blackwater Park, Deliverance, and Still Life, and they all blew him away and he bought them all very quickly after. And, my girlfriend and her brother have both gotten into Opeth and Porcupine Tree a lot thanks to my exposing them to it. Those are my few success stories, most people aren't even worth trying it on cause they're too closed minded to accept that it's not only a valid form of expression but also quite beautiful music.

Well, part of it is that if you're not used to them, the melodies they use might not strike you as special at all. Since the growls are an extra turn-off, most people won't give it the time that may be necessary. Then again, other people might instantly love it if they'd just give it a chance.

I'm pretty musically tolerant, and let people listen to what they will unless it's all just top 40 garbage and nothing else. I only try sending extreme metal stuff to people who are into it, into something near it, or just have open musical tastes. Or people I just want to annoy with music I know they'll hate with a tiny hopeful chance they'll like it and want more. I and others with similar tastes have gotten a lot of people into a lot of bands, anyway.
