my band wrote a new song last night and started recording it. the songs still missing the second guitar in the chorus and a couple other things need fixed but for the most part its tracked and mixed, but i still am not happy with the way my recordings are turning out. any advice at all on how to make this mix better? remember its not mastered at all.

Guitars sound a little thin - too much upper mid and treble not enough lower mid.
Drop the snare back a little and give it a little reverb - too dry and up front right now.
You 've taken too much low end out of the bass. This is rock not deathcore so give it more bottoms and mids.
From a tracking pov when you have the clean versus lead part in your verse they are out of tune with each other.

Yea needs a lot more low end. Like he said this is rock music, it needs that big low end. Just be sure not to over do it. I like the guitar tone as a starting point. Just needs more balls so to speak and the added low end will help that out tremendously

Sounds much better and more balanced to me :)
Still think your distorted guitar has a little too much top end on it - sounds a bit harsh in the mix. Try adjusting your amp settings or put in a little cut around 4khz.
For me you could use a rounder bass tone in this - back off a little on your mid scoop and adjust your lpf slightly higher.
The snare sits better in the mix now but has lost the nice transient tops so you might want to put a little boost in around 6-8khz or a little cut on the low end to make it a little flatter overall.
Finally please, PLEASE retrack that left side picked clean guitar. It is so out of tune it's not true.
A good reference mix for you might be Funeral For A Friend - Casually Dressed... produced and mixed by Colin Richardson.
Has a good modern rock guitar tone and stunning drums and bass. Check it out.

thanks for sticking with me on this man. you've been really helpful.

Heres another mix of it. This time I messed with the amp setting on the guitar a tiny bit, not a whole lot though. personally I like me guitar tone a lot and i already had a notch of -18db at 4k with a Q of 9. I did eq the distorted lead a bit tho to cut out the harshness in it. I did a little to the bass this time too but don't really remember what. bass has always been my weakest thing. I did what you said to the snare as well, and minor changes to the kick. I still haven't been able to re-track the clean guitar tho (Im the drummer) but i do hear what your talking about i think. we tune before every take but the guitarist might have played the wrong fret he said. we will also redo the bridge lead again cause it sounds kinda off time. and that funeral for a friend recording is good but we actually have been trying to use armor for sleep as a reference. mostly the guitar tones.

also i kinda mastered it. didn't go in depth with the master mostly just the loudness maximizer.

any more advice?

Definite improvement for me - starting to sound great. Try adding a little eq to the master buss - a bit of top end shelf seated in the 8 to 10khz region will give your cyms and drum transients more air and detail.

Now you need vox!
