It's a clip from one of the songs my band is recording right now...
I've been able to do only a rough mix right now, but I'd like to know what you think about this... The rhythm guitars are untouched, the melody guitars have been hi passed at 150Hz as well as solos, which have an additional delay for spaciousness...

Keep in mind the bass guitar is a guide track, played in one take with all the unwanted noises and whatnot ;) We'll be starting with vocals next weekend and then the bass guitar, it's been a while since we've finished with the guitars.

The rhythms are stock Gibson Flying V Faded into Engl Blackmore at Lo-gain channel, with gain at 12 o'clock, plugged into Marshall Slash Sig. cab with V30's inside and then miked with a single SM57, one rhythm track per side.

Thanks people!

Sounds pretty good, but I think its a bit overcompressed.
Also the snare is too dry to my taste(But thats taste so..).

Other then that, it sounds really good.
I love that crunch in the guitars, and the leadtone was really cool too.

Sounds really good! I love the guitar sounds, both rhythm and lead stuff. Great! The only thing I'd pick at is the snare. As Notuern said, it's just personal taste, but I'd change the reverb on the snare. But then again, I'm a big fan of the Sneap-verb. :)

But nice song, and nice sound.

I agree with you... The drums are the pain in the butt here, but they're programmed so it's always a struggle to fit them in a song (at least for me). From my experience, even the badly recorded drums tend to sit in the mix more easily than programmed stuff, I guess it's the human timing and dynamics.
I'm not sure what's clouding the drums meat... Maybe it's the guide bass track (old strings make for a lot of dull boominess) or maybe I should cut some of the guitar meat to let the drums meat be heard, dunno...
As for the snare reverb, I too find it a bit dry, I'd like to make it big and spacy and not bring the mud into the mix, I'll fiddle with that today afternoon.

I have heard of "meat" regarding guitars but never for drums :)

Anyway i don't think you should do anything to the guitars (except the HP LP if you've not done it yet) to solve your drums problem.

First fix your snare problem, and then to make the drums in general fit in the mix just mess up with velocities to make them sound more realistic (and don't compress more than needed as well since that's gonna kill your dynamics), and use reverb and/or room sound to glue them together.

What reverb are you using on the snare? I know everyone has their favorites, and a lot of people have pretty good success with Freeverb2, but I whole-heartedly recommend Ambience. I can even give you the patch I made which gets me close (not exactly, but close) to the typical Sneap-verb (a la "Doomsday Machine"). Oh, and for you Mac users, they made a Mac version as well.

Thanks for the tip!
I've been using Lexicon impulses I downloaded from noisevault.com library, but I'll give this plugin a go as well... I think it was one of PCM90's impulses.

Well, I'm not really hunting down his reverb tail, but could come handy and I'd appreciate the patch, thanks! :kickass:
