what are really good settings for futting guitar and drum tracks? i just cant get the damn thing right, it looks like it is cutting the right silence out but there still might be a hit for string in there somewhere? i have been just putting on the tracks and then going and removing by hand? could someone give out a couple of pointers?

Try changing your selections, ie not the whole song at once.
I can't live without strip silence, takes years off my editing.
This is nothing like doing it by hand, but of course you should always listen to your edits.

i do after each one, before the edit and after. i just cant take the time hand editing on this cd(deadline), so if anyone can give me some good starting points with strip silence that would be great, it is my first time really using this amazing tool...thanks

don't waste time on the internet finding the fastest way. You are already using strip silence. The.Fastest.Way.

And since you said this is the first time using it, I'll take that as meaning you haven't read the instructions yet. Page 665 of the Pro Tools Reference Guide pdf

set the region start and end pad to 17 ms..
then you can use the batch fades (command/ctrl +f) and choose 17 ms and voila the fades are done.
