Studio Drum Pics

The fact that the guitar was so in your face on the Odyssey is what really keeps it from being my favorite album. Until a few weeks ago, I did not know that tehre was actually REAL keyboard parts in the song aside from the 6 second Saw section coming out of the intro, and the keyboard solo. Whatever they did on V, they need to keep doing it.

I don't like how the keyboards are hidden! Romeo, raise the volume on the keyboards please!!!!!

But I do like the drums on the Odyssey. I wasn't a fan of the kick sound for a while, but I got used to it. I really enjoy the tone of the toms more on the Odyssey than on V. V's tom's sound too artificial for me.

I totally agree about the Odyssey being compressed to the point of almost hindering the album's integrity. I definitely do not like how the keys were sort of squashed underneath the guitar and vox. I agree with Ptah and hope that the sound is that sound from V, that was a great mix for these guys.

But then again that's Romeo's production style. Didn't Russ say he had to get his solo album remastered because Romeo made it "too perfect?"

the sound on V was grand and huge, they had more facility to work, including two excellent engineers and a solid drum tracking room (Trax East).

The Odyssey was something they did largely at Mike's home studio, and seeing as how Jason Rullo is somewhat drum tuning-challenged, it doesn't surprise me that the drum sounds (not the cymbals) on that album are almost entirely artificial. However, the clean separated vibe of that drum mix was integral in acheiving a very intimate sound. And another thing, those complaining about the album being too compressed, if anything during mastering this not compressed enough. The snare sticks out slightly too much, and the overall drum mix (especially the overheads) was not compressed enough I don't think.

but yea either way, their albums have only sounded cleaner each time. While I think V had the most 'organic' sound to it, I have positive hopes for how the new one sounds. And to the guy who remarked about how "god I hope there are no triggers on his album", I don't think you have any slight idea about how important they are these days for drum tracking, and half the time they're doing what the engineer wants, you never actually hear them anyway.

Oh and Ptah (or whatever the fuck your pseudo Egyptian forum alias is), the 80s snare sound was only popular in the 80s for a reason ;)

Hey, don't be hatin' on the Scorpions like that. :p Seriously, I just like the fact taht it sounded so reverby. That's why I demand on every recording my band ever does, we turn the reverb up on the snare drum.

Agreed on all points, more keys dammit!
