When it's within a couple hours of bedtime, I find that death metal and thrash pumps me up too much. I need something mellow (but NOT happy) to unwind to. So far, the mellow bands that I listen to at night include: Opeth, Arcane Sun, Katatonia, Lacuna Coil, Anathema, My Dying Bride, Mourning Beloveth, Novermbre.... You get my drift. I'm looking for more suggestions.

Well, you already own the greatest album ever, namely Arcane Sun. What more do you need?

Oh well, I'll give more suggestions: In the Woods..., Agalloch, or try some darkwave like Dargaard or Die Verbannten Kinder Evas.

Also, any Soilwork album will put you right to sleep. Pure snoozefests, that. But I digress.

Not necessarily mellow...but slower ;)

* essential

The 3rd And The Mortal (especially "Sorrow" and their masterpiece "Tears Laid In Earth")
The Gathering ("How To Measure A Planet?")
Fates Warning ("Awaken The Guardian", "No Exit", "Perfect Symmetry")
Sieges Even ("Steps", "A Sense Of Change")
Soul Cages
Shadow Gallery

Antimatter would fit the bill nicely, although it wouldn't classify as metal.

Dream Theater's Scenes From A Memory is a good choice, what with all the hypnotherapy stuff, plus the long runtime.

Agalloch, In The Woods..., Novembre, Dredg, Winds, Aereogramme, and Porcupine Tree are good too.

The best album to fall asleep to that I've heard is Esmerine-If Only A Sweet Surrender To The Nights To Come Be True, but be warned that it is not metal at all.

Green Carnation - Light of Day, Day of Darkness (a masterpiece, does a child always have to die for such music to be created?)
Bethlehem
Deinonychus - Mournument
The Gathering - anything, I happen to like their latest album Souvenirs right now even though it isn't metal)
Kari - Pilot (former The 3rd and the Mortal vocalist)
The 3rd and the Mortal - Memoirs, Painting on Glass, Tears Laid in Earth
Sopor Aeternus & the Enxemble of Shadows
Empyrium

And the following will REALLY put you to sleep:

Ulver - recent stuff
Burzum - Filosofem (the last 3 or 4 tracks... one of them is just one repetitive ambient melody that goes on for like 20 minutes)
Arcana
Ordo Rosario Equilibrio
Sophia
Coph Nia
Raison d'Etre

everytime i listen to forest stream i end up sleeping. Good stuff I get so relaxed
