an exit to eternal summer slacking
In the current issue of Revolver Magazine (October) is a section called 'Swedish Metal Invasion'. There are longer articles about Opeth, Arch Enemy, Soilwork and Swedish Metal in general. Not much about Dark Tranquillity but they do get some ink. The CDs listed are according to Revolver the Ultimate Swedish Metal Collection
Bathory - blood fire death
Entomed - wolverine blues
Meshuggah - destroy erase improve
At The Gates - slaughter of the soul
Refused - the shape of punk to come
Opeth - blackwater park
Hypocrisy - the fourth dimension
Dissection - storm of the light's bane
The Haunted - the haunted made me do it
Cult Of Luna - salvation
In Flames - the jester race
Candlemass - epicus doomicus metallicus
Nasum - shift
Tiamat - wildhoney
Soilwork - a predator's portrait
The Hellacopters - by the grace of god
Arch Enemy - wages of sin
Katatonia - brave murder day
Dismember - massive killing capacity
Burst - prey on life

for the record (ha. ha.), i wouldn't know what to substitute some of these albums with. for many long years i've listened to bands without being interested in where they were from, so to sort out the swedish acts from those hailing from other countries would require too much effort right now. i'll just express an opinion on the records mentioned by the magazine.

Bathory - blood fire death

i've always liked hammerheart best. is this album death metal or something?

Entombed - wolverine blues

lovely.

Meshuggah - destroy erase improve

don't remember anything about it. i have recollections of other meshuggah records, and they never did anything much for me.

At The Gates - slaughter of the soul

well, of course. it's just sad that they ditched dark tranquillity for at the gates because they're more historical.

Refused - the shape of punk to come

could it be more obvious that this is punk music? incidentally, i really like it, so if that's supposed to be the ultimate swedish music rahvin loves collection, that's a fairly accurate entry.

Opeth - blackwater park

lame, pick-the-album-that-fanboys-love choice.

Hypocrisy - the fourth dimension

*shrugs* ok.

Dissection - storm of the light's bane

chalk up another one for the list of music liked by rahvin. i hope its merits are undisputed. are they?

The Haunted - the haunted made me do it

i remember listening to it twice. it seemed quite unoriginal at the time.

Cult Of Luna - salvation

don't know. i've never heard this one.

In Flames - the jester race

i guess i should be glad they didn't pick a post-whoracle record instead, but - as above - i'm sorry they ditched dark tranquillity for in flames because they're more popular.

Candlemass - epicus doomicus metallicus

blargh. i really really don't like this. not to mention that the title is ridiculous, in a rather sad way.

Nasum - shift

shamefully, i must admit my ignorance again.

Tiamat - wildhoney

i'm not sure why everybody praises wildhoney: to me, it seems weak compared to both some of their earlier and later works.

Soilwork - a predator's portrait

without dark tranquillity, they'd still be recording noises made when excavating graveyards.

The Hellacopters - by the grace of god

oh, please. :(

Arch Enemy - wages of sin

wages of sin : melodic death metal = a rerun of dawson's creek : the invention of television.

Katatonia - brave murder day

i approve. not a fan of katatonia in general, but this was pretty awesome.

Dismember - massive killing capacity

i can't tell any dismember record apart from the others, so i'll trust the fact that they did something really good at some point.

Burst - prey on life

i have no idea what this is.

It's supposed to be viking metal. Haven't heard it.

I think Cult Of Luna fits well in that it's (one of) the most famous Swedish sludge bands. Not sure if they're making an invasion anywhere though, but at least they tour Finland unlike a million other bands.

I would hope that this album's merits are undisputed, in making grindcore as invinting to the metal listener as possible if nothing else. Great album.

Soilwork and Arch Enemy, either one of them could be on the list just fine, but Dark Tranquillity should at least be in place of either of them. Saying that doesn't seem right though, they're miles ahead both bands. Still, Burning Bridges and The Predator's Portrait (though I'm not sure I see all the greatness that others do) are in the top 10 of Swedish melodeath records (if you can only pick one per band, anyway), which is why I don't understand choosing Wages Of Sin. I would like to be optimistic, but it probably has a lot to do with the singer. The music went into a more commercial direction, but not necessarily that significantly.

There is an abscence of Pain Of Salvation, but then this isn't an invasion list that's all that much based on music anyway. Still, when they stretch as far as some punk band and an album like Shift (grindcore, not metal), I don't see why The Perfect Element isn't on the list.

All I could really say about that is Dark Tranquillity should be in there. It's actually a real surprise they are not.

Im happy to See Meshuggah DEI and Dissection. Im not sure If I'd have gone with that for Opeth. They probably didnt choose morning rise because Akerfeldt has said he hates it on many occasions... even though it's ace.

I wouldn't disagree with the choice for the Haunted either. That's good that is.

At The Gates should have been 'With fear I kiss The Burning Darkness'. with that album you can hear where they came from with there sound and composition and you can hear where they are going... Of course Slaughter of the soul, although it is ace, is not all that original compared to their other bits and pieces.
