Swedes and Finns: What're your opinions on your countries?

The country itself is ok I guess, but the long, dark winters and the depressing, "let's get drunk and fight somebody" people here are making me want to move out of here. I'm quite sure I'll do it when I finish my education and such. I've always wanted to live abroad anyway though, so it's possibly the biggest reason.

I was an exchange student in denmark for half a year (still counts as svandinavia, amirite?)

Had the time of my life, everything was amazing, except the danes, i think they don't like foreigners, but who doesn't anyway :D

I lived in Norway for a few years of my early teens and I enjoyed it thoroughly. Well, as much as someone could without ever getting drunk or laid.

Of all the places I've lived, I think Oslo is where I'd most enjoy moving back to.

When people loves his country, it's a good country. Every State has his problem of course, but when you're happy it means the problems are minus problems.
Here in Italy the 90% of the people wanna be somewhere else or is planning to go away because of chaotic cities, stupid and criminal politicians, stupid laws, no welfare, no services, no research investements, etc...
Look at our cities, envied by all the world, but full of cars, dirtiness, graffities, unorganized, etc... it seems a 3rd world country.
So, when I went on Sweden and in Denmark, it seemed to be in a paradise. Yeah, I can say that scandinavian people are more "cold" than italians, or at least they have a different sense of humor, but they are pretty organized and the rules are rules, not like here when everybody does what he want.
I remember when I arrived in Copenhagen. I took the metro from the airport and me and my girlfriend sat in a 4 sit place. The metro was empty. At the next stop a man came in and immediately he said "You can't sit here. If you have a bag you have to stay there".... same with the bike lanes and pedestrian lanes. These things are unimaginable in Italy :D

Most of what XeS complains about his homeland I could address at mine as well...
More and more people are losing jobs on a daily basis and there seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel... The politicians and governing structures look only after their asses and what's worst, most of the important functions are held by incompetent dickheads who "earned" the positions just by being members of a certain party.
But there's a saying that goes something like "every nation has a government that it deserves" and I mostly agree... Many people here are constantly ranting about how everything sucks but few can spare 5 minutes of their precious time and vote when elections come. Can't blame them 100% though, the choice often gets down to voting against someone you really don't want to see elected, as opposed to voting for someone you really support and respect.

All in all, it's not hard for grass to be greener on the other side of the fence for us here :)
Most of the people I talk with idolize Scandinavian countries, mostly because of the presence of order, which is thoroughly absent here... Oh, Germany as well! Since we had a fair share of "gastarbeiters" it's no wonder...

I love my country, it's beautiful and offers many resources for us, but the people are stupid and shortsighted, I'm afraid by the time my children grow up there will be nothing left in our possession, considering the rate they're selling our "family silver" by... :erk: I think if it was someone elses they would make billions out of it, but not us, we're sitting on a pile of gold and don't know what to do with it...

Well, both yes and no.. but its not the government oppressing the people, its civilians oppressing other civilians(If you have anti-socialist views you are a despicable human being basically.).
If you have any opinion about our immigration policies apart from "Lets take in even more people!", you are put in the same group as the nazis.
If you have any views that arent considered socialist, you are put in the same group as the nazis.
If you have any "negative" views about gay rights(Like gay marriage in church.), you are put in the same group as nazis.
Well, i guess you get the picture by now.
(Och nej, jag stödjer _INTE_ SD.)

And its ugly to talk about things that you think need to be changed in this country, because a good citizen doesnt want to stir anything up, change is to messy for us Swedes.

Basically, the Swedish mentality is that you should have the same opinion as everyone else about everything, otherwise you are a horrible person and people will shun you almost as if you where carrying leprosy.

Edit: Oh, and we dont protest ANYTHING(Except for when we support terrorists ofc.).

Hmm, yeah, now that you mention it, I remember that's similar to what I had heard; I suppose I can't condemn a society that puts pressure on people to be progressive and forward-thinking, but balance in all things is always key, and too much liberalism can make a nation a bunch of pussies

And what's the deal with immigration there? I can only assume that despite the (coerced) support for it it's still a pretty complex and in-depth process? (since those immigrants are gonna have to pay the super-high taxes to help support your society, unlike here, where all the illegal ones just get paid off the books and use all our services paid for with our tax dollars :Smug: But then again, they do work their asses off, and are good people, and most Americans would be very reluctant to do the work they do!)

Hahahahahahaha, that's so incredible - and Sweden has a king? o_O I guess he's basically just a figurehead, like the royalty in England? (you guys really are democratic in one form or another, right?)

Marcus, there are quite a few monarchies in Europe: UK, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and Spain.

All these monarchies are parliamentary/constitutional though, meaning that the sovereigns (more or less) only fulfil representative functions.

Hmm, interesting, makes sense I suppose, since most of them have such long, rich histories and traditions

And sopulurn, I take it that's not necessarily the case? Is illegal immigration a big problem there too, then?

Andorra, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco and Vatican are also monarchies.

One of the places I'm considering for graduate school is the University of Helsinki... any warnings?

Get used to the coldness, both the weather and the people

well, you either have to swim or come via lapland or russia, so I would say no.

OT:
The King is a wealthy drunkard and whorehound bastard, living from the taxes we pay. Thanks God in XXI century I can make that statement without being decapitated.

Always loved this song :heh::heh:

That really sucks man. When I look back, the only positive thing about the war was that it forced my family and I to come here, somewhere in between the broken down country we started and the western world (can't quite decide where Oz lies in this respect).

Cool thread Marcus. Been scoping out the potential to move to one of the Scandinavian countries one day, but there are always those drawbacks you don't hear about, plus the need to learn another (seemingly freakin complex) language, the super-high income tax etc. Though no shortage of tits apparently.
