Tarja Turunen like you've never seenher before!

If you guys knew anyhting about metal, you'd quit laughing at Waltari pretty fast :erk: They have been around for over 20 years, released 13 albums, some DVDs and done all possible crossover things with classical/symphony/ballet and whatever/you name it. They are very well known, influental and appreciated band all over Europe with a steady following. For Tarja who was a young but talented beginner back in 1999 it was an honor to be asked to sing that main role in Waltari's "Evangelicum".

Some research about the band and their achievenets might help you in sophisticating yourselves. :Smug:

This has nothing to do with how 'sophisticated' we are, funny is funny and thats it.

Yes, well while you're salivating to watch her fail in life miserably, you might wish to note that was done when she was the lead singer and on good terms with the band you consider gods. No doubt she was eating just fine then. In the future she'll probably be eating better than anyone in Nightwish.

Magius, if she flops, it would be of her own choosing. She asked to get fired, and she did. BTW, Nightwish made it to #84 on the charts with Anette. In this business, the numbers are all that matters.

I can guarantee you that Tarja will be a ProgPower IX. And Glenn won't have to pay her one red cent........except for the bottle of Corona that she serves him.

By that same logic, we should respect Insane Clown Posse because there are lots of people who take them seriously.

Forgive my impudence, for I am but a humble n00b to the PPUSA forums.

That being said, like many of the people here, I am a seasoned music veteran and I know my fair share about metal:
I am still laughing at Waltari.

Your devotion to this band is admirable and I respect your opinion, but it must be stated here and now that putting out thirteen albums and some DVDs over 20 years and doing a bunch of crossover stuff to the adoration of a dedicated fanbase does not under any circumstances make Waltari "good" or even "moderately tolerable."

You cannot possibly expect anyone to agree that to witness a man with an orange afro and corpse-paint sailing through the air on a crudely constructed suspension apperatus (while holding a wireless mic and plotting revenge against the various flailing women, chorus-line soldiers and platinum-wigged sword-wielding beefcakes with pipecleaner wings) is to know something about metal.

Back to the subject of Tarja, her voice sounds great, and she looks completely ridiculous in that weird hair-do and goofy floral arrangement/art-deco conceptual piece around her neck.
I never much cared for her singing, but she does sound quite good here...in fact, she could serve me a Corona any day.

But screw Tarja; gimme more of those Roman guards.
I want to see a few of them can-can through my hotel room next year. :loco:

I'm sorry if I came up to this subject with a little too sharp wording, my intention wasn't to be rude or to sound arrogant. :saint:

Neither am I especially devoted to Waltari, but the fact is they are one of the acknowledged pioneers breaking barriers between metal and other genres and especially in combining classical elements into metal. Their releases and works in 1995 - 1999 are classics, especially the stage presentation of "Yeah! Yeah! Die! Die! Death Metal Symphony in Deep C" (1995) - a project with conductor of Avanti! symphony orchestra Riku Niemi (later also known for collaboration with Tarja Turunen) combining heavy metal with classical music is a solid cornerstone in symphonic metal scene. I wonder if there exist a single symphonic death/power metalband who haven't listened to this CD very carefully?

The random clips about the redhaired clown (actually "The Witch") who is one main charachter in the stage play of "Evangelicum" (1999) may well look funny and make people laugh when taken out of the full context and nothing really wrong with that, it's still entertainment we're talking about. :)
Just keep in mind that "Evangelicum" is over a hour-long epic cross-over stage presentation performed in collaboration with the band, the National Ballet & Opera and Orchestra, decorated with a huge lightshow. In a word: Art. It definitely doesn't open up at one view for everyone but needs some time and efforts to digest. I've got it on video and I have seen it quite a few times but it still amazes me every time.

Waltari in general is definitely not the easiest to listen to, hence they may appear too progressive/artsy for most metalheads who are not interested in progressive side of the genre or in pure classical music, but for the open minded I'd recommed for a start to have a listen to their two latest CDs "Blood Sample" (2005) and "Release Date" (2007) which are quite straightforward and even addictive - in Waltari measures. :)
