Tech 21 RBI Bass Pre vs. BBE Sound BMax

I own an RBI and it is awesome. Obviously if you want the sansamp sound it does that. I tried the BBE and it was good but I thought it seemed more suited to cleaner sounds, didn't really have the grit factor that the RBI has and the built in sonic maximizer was not interesting to me. Alternatively you could check out the RPM as well, basically the RBI without presence control but with more mid eq. Both the RBI and BBE can be found pretty cheap used.

Another +1 for the RBI, it can do nice smooth cleans or add some awesome grit when split with a DI. Get it.

rbi all day!

+1.

The "plugin versions" of the SansAmp stuff is no match for the real deal IMO. Stuff like the TSE BOD is a valiant effort, and nice for people who can't afford the real unit, but compared to the real thing, its got a harsh top end and just doesn't capture the warmth of the unit.

I can't even stand to use BOD or the Avid SansAmp on anything other than the top end mixed with the DI lowend, but my RBI kills just straight in, without any DI. I still record both and mix to taste, but I'd be perfectly happy if a DI wasn't available for some reason.
