This will save the Gear thread from being stockpiled full of Virtuoso bull crap

Turn down your Steve Vai music and go for it........

Since this was discussed in the gear thread.

Guitar related. What is the best way to hold your three fingers not holding the pick whilst floating and do different ways affect your playing?

lolz 42.

I actually curl my fingers up into a fist when I'm doing free floating or palm resting alternate picking. Like, just big fast runs. It's weird, my hand goes into a full closed position really.

But then there are some runs I do where I mix legato and alternate picking and I don't anchor, and sometimes I do anchor. I'm all over the place but it works. I'm trying to work something out though, lol.

I only ever have 2 fingers not holding the pick. A three-fingered grip just feels more natural for me. I can play with two but the control feels tighter and more precise with three. The two spares are sometimes leveraged on the body near the volume knob but they usually just float free.

Ok so what is the best way to pick? With your arm or wrist? For example: Petrucci picks with his entire arm when he speed picks
Romeo uses his wrist
Kiko from Angra uses his wrist

I usually find theres wrist picking can only get you to a certain point and then i have to use my arm for excess speed. I always use my arm for fast palm mute stuff.

That might contribute to my being such a slow motherfucker. I pick almost entirely from the wrist. My arm only really moves if I'm picking further up or down the string (as in close to / further from the bridge) and that's all about changing the tone, not gaining speed.

I do the same as Petrucci mostly, which is also what Rusty Cooley does (only without his pinky for an anchor, he floats his hand) but if I'm using economy picking I do it just like Romeo or Loureiro. Kiko economy picks his huge runs and I'm pretty sure Romeo uses economy picking on SOME of his big runs.

I guess it all depends on how much you practice, eh? Like with wrist picking there is really a point where you can't go much/any faster, you are right. But for most people that point is up in the 200bpm+ areas, then they use more arm movement.

I use my wrist for fast palm muting stuff, I don't know anyone who uses their arm with palm muting, kinda seems hard to do whilst your wrist is usually on the bridge somewhere, which anchors your arm. Each to their own. :)

Yeah I pick right over the bridge pickup when I want to go faster, and when I don't really need the speed I pick between the bridge and middle or neck pickups somewhere.

I've seen alot of guitarists use their arm for palm muted stuff. No one exclusively uses their arm. That would be stupid. There will still be a bit of wrist movement. What about palm muted speed picking runs? A lot of guitarists do that and would use the same technique to do so.

Your wrist doesn't have to sit right on top of the bridge to palm mute. I have no problem using the same technique to speed pick with palm muting as i do normally??????????????
