He used it for the really HEAVY stuff, like "Eaten". I've never played a 5-string, but I'm guessing it's somewhat of a baritone guitar.
Yeah, it's a baritone guitar and was used on the entire RTC album as well as NMF songs and Crimson II!

Tune it as you fucking want. It pretty much depends on what you want to play and whats the easiest way to play it.why should it be any different from a 6 or a 7 string guitar.
