Brandishing more hooks than a tackle box, The Abominable Iron Sloth is a 26-minute foray into sludgy doom, which is strengthened by refreshing earthy tones and fuzziness galore. And judging by this debut alone, The Abominable Iron Sloth featuring players from Will Haven and Oddman were quite a find for Goodfellow, this being the best Ive heard from them in 2006 if Intronauts Null is quietly swept under the rug.
Besides the thick, meaty distorted riffs that are caked onto each and every song, the first thing youll notice is this Californian quintets firm grip on songwriting. In other words, the tracks pan out smoothly and are a joy to listen to, even if theyre relatively predictable. Supposedly kin to Iron Monkey or any band that references iron and an animal in their name The Abominable Iron Sloth are tremendous as far as outright groove is concerned. Of the nine compositions, all of them are surefire winners, though there are a couple that stand head and shoulders above the rest due to the fine use of the almighty riff: Parasite Hilton and Other Flaws Inherent to Wealth (Run slut run Haha), The Family That Slays Together Stays Together, and Climax of a Nightmare. The other attributes should gather applause too, seeing as how the core vocals are fitting, the musicianship is tight, and the production is exquisite. Plus, for the most part theres not a sliver of filler on The Abominable Iron Sloth, though you still wont like certain songs as much as the truly formidable ones.
Aside from the length, dont let the fact that Goodfellow unleashed this deter you just because their catalog has tipped towards the core side of things during recent times, providing that aint your bag. With their preoccupation with sludge and doom, sparring with The Abominable Iron Sloth proves a prize-yielding experience, one of those battles that is supremely rewarding for both sides as oxymoronic as it sounds. All in all, however, this is a great introduction to a group that I sincerely hope will be sticking around.
