The Annihilator paradox

Annihilator - Why bother? Way better thrash out there...heavier, faster, more original. The vocals on Devil's Dance off All For You are hilarilious, though. Not a good band. Get some Testament, Kreator, Slayer, Metal Church, Megadeth, whatever. Not Annihilator. Stupid band name too.

That Dave Padden guy they have now is just a goofy, awful vocalist. Jeff wasn't so bad in the voice department.

So you're not annoyed by the silly vocal delivery at all?

I mean, they do rule in some respects, but I just can't get past them vocals. I know they have different vocalists, but I assume Jeff tells them how to sing.

Lyrics dont mean much to me. I love Aaron Randell's voice so thats all that matters to me, vocal wise. There mid-late albums dont do much for me though I have to admit.

Well I have'nt heard every cd of theirs, but I must say the early stuff has alot of great progressions within one song. What dissapoints me most is I'll probably never see these guys unless I travel out of the states.

But some of his lyrics, and the really dumb vocal phrasing and silly vocal ideas are just annoying and stupid. Sometimes they are so unmetal it's almost embarassing to listen to.

Must've picked that up from Megadeth.

I dont know where most you were in '89 but when Annihilators debut Alice in Hell hit the stores, it was hot!

Necks were snapping all around the world - it was unfortunate Waters could not manifest another full disc or thrashing bliss ever again. I dont think anybody cared about the lyrics being cheesey, once Crystal Ann finnished and Alsion Hell began it was headbanging time.

We've all got our personal favourites of thrash. A few of the old thrash bands some people still call out as classics, didnt go the distance with me. But as I recall, the general consensus back then was, Alice in Hell emerged as somewhat of a masterpiece in its day.

I can see where you are coming from Ack but I dont have that problem with Alice in Hell. I still really enjoy the debut and continue to avoid most everything thereafter recorded by them, for the reasons you stated. Do you really struggle that much with the debut, Ack?

I only own Alice in Hell, and Never, Neverland. I think those two albums are pretty good. I am not bothered neither by the lyrics nor the vocals. They are a decent band.

Truthfully I am more familiar with Never, Neverland, so I can't remember the ratio of dumbness to killerness on the first release. I think I actually like the songs I like on NNL better than I like the songs on AiH.

I am not trying to erase their impact within metal and metal history. The band (which is the sum of all of its albums, and is the brainchild of one man) is just an odd paradox to me.

Yeah, not all over the world, chum.

Chum, thats a brand of dog food here, you calling me dogfood?! Ok, no worries Whiskas, like i said everyone has there own tastes. Maybe European audiences took to it differently, maybe after years of metal partying, my memory isnt as accurate as I like to think. I'm a little surprised to see someone from that era write it off as shit, maybe thats how it was perceived in Norway...

Coming from Australia, I was mostly exposed to American and UK press - In hindsight, I was probably judging its impact (on the world "as I knew it then") via the attention it received from various publications I was reading at the time. Its a good thing we've got the internet now to stop that confusion happening again.:p

Oh yeah, thanks for the clip Satan, great song IMO:headbang:

Really, dog food? haha, no, that wasn't quite my intent!

Yeah, around here, if it wasn't Celtic Frost, Bathory, Tormentor, Slayer or Mayhem, it sucked... Slight exaggeration, obviously, but that's the kind of metal that group-pressure dictated we'd listen to!

annihilator is one of my top 10 thrash bands. alice in hell and never, neverland are classics from 80's, but i like so much set the world on fire, criteria for a black widow and carnival diablos too, but after that, i must to say that annihilator is over! the last album is very bad and simple.

 No worries.

Figured as much, I guess Forbidden was off the menu too. I remember I had to tone down my love of the glammier metal bands back in the day, due to peer pressure, the late 80's early 90's were intense times.

Indeed they were, especially for a young and impressionable young boy like myself in those days. But Forbidden was quite... unforbidden? 'Forbidden Evil' and 'Twisted Into Form' were actually big favourites among many black metal heads here in Norway, believe it or not. Of course, most preferred Destruction and Sodom, but still, not many US thrash bands were given as much love as Forbidden.
