The Aussie music thread

There's been a few great bands coming through SLS Studios or Dusk Music Video Production lately that I've had the good fortune to work with.

Hemina was already mentioned - I wouldn't call myself a prog fan particularly but I enjoyed how the EP came up. Some great melodies and clever arrangements. We should be doing the full-length album later this year too.

Grey Waters - I can't even describe what this stuff is like and let the description do it justice. Check out http://www.myspace.com/greywatersband - the EP we did was sort of depressive alternative post-grunge / britpop / metal ... sorta ... The new album that we're tracking now is immense - there's electronic stuff, real strings and piano... all kinds of stuff.

Chris Brooks - if you guys don't know about Chris then you're totally missing out. He is in my opinion one of the best rock guitarists to ever come out of Australia, full stop. http://www.duskvideo.net.au/chrisbrooks.php

A few people mentioned Voyager. Every time we tour with those guys I remember why they're up there as one of our biggest exports - absolute class.

I reckon Darker Half are really one to watch too. They've come along leaps and bounds from the first time we shared a stage a few years ago and I think if they keep getting better at this rate, they'll be one of our top drawcards in no time.

There's been a few others than have come through the studio or we've met on tour that have made me sit up and go "woah, this is great" but I'm having a major mental blank right now, so I'll likely come back to this thread later. :)

Birds of Tokyo are awesome.

I got to give a mention also to Thirsty Merc.
They are absolutely awesome live.
Some of the most talented muso's I have seen.
I saw them for the second time the day before xmas eve and again they blew me away with their musicianship.
Ray Thistlethwaite is one seriously talented dude.
Great voice, great on guitar and amazing on the piano. Very jazzy.

I like their songs a lot but seeing them live is on a whole other level.
You can definitely tell that 2 of his biggest influences are Deep Purple and Iron Maiden!

Sounds great! Reminds me of Amorphis in parts too. Will be interested in the album.

I aslo believe the Lead singer dated Amiee Osbourne at one time :err:

There's some cool stuff in this thread. Still haven't checked it all out. Grey Waters sound really good. Birds of Tokyo sound like Muse in the second song.

Some more good shit:

Orpheus - melodic death from Melbourne. These guys have an album launch this Friday, I'm hoping to make it down since they are playing with Dreadnaught. There are two songs from the album on their site, very well produced Children of Bodom cross Dark Tranquillity style melo death.

Edit : The second track is so awesome. The keys are blowing my mind.

Distaudio - a one man electro/industrial project from Brisbane. If you like NIN's early material and poppier stuff then this should be up your alley. A bit too Reznor in the vocals at times, but pretty great nonetheless. I bought the album after one listen to the songs on this link.

Here's a band I recorded here at SLS earlier this month called Electrik Dynamite... basically modern arena rock is the best description I could think of, although they have some really proggy moments and some great AOR stuff happening too. Keep an eye on these guys, I reckon they're gonna explode over the next 12 months:

I used to be good mates with Duane in high school. Never been much of a fan of his musical endeavors, but he knows how to promote his bands thats for sure. They are more image than substance, but it will get them far.

That track is much more stripped back than their earlier material, which was also very metalcore influenced with breakdowns and dirty vocals galore.

That song could pass for something recorded 25 years ago. Sounds pretty good, even if the lyrics seem a tad shallow! Did you record a lot of vocal layers?
