My friends, myself and my team just added one of the coolest pieces of gear to our list of fun. A all working, great condition, Wheatstone SP6 with Burr Brown's and Penny Giles faders! Amazingly good quality and very solidly build. Modular, and routing for mixing hybrid that's perfect. Also added an ISA Two pre at the same time! Ready to hate me? Total cost? $150 out the door from Craigslist.

Nice!!

There's been a few great deals on consoles locally here over the past few years, but price of upkeep on older units scares me.

Took some channels out to start the cleaning process. Looks like most of the channels are very new while a small few are the originals, so I got NEW channels in this thing haha. KILLER.

Savage. There are insane good deals to be had on older desks. I got a 32 channel/ 8 bus Hill Audio concept 4400 for 125 euro in decent condition. It's a higher end model from a respected maker that would have cost several thousand pounds when it was new! Couple of channels have issues but for the most part it works well. 32 nice mic pres and great EQ on it too. Thing is I've had it for about 2 years and I'm still not getting the kind of use out of it I could, it's just not practical and getting it set up in a way to maximizes its usage is expensive.

The downsides are the extra costs and the space they need. Maintenance and cabling for example. If a problem crops up it's expensive to fix. I've been doing up a plan for cabling and setting up patch bay for my desk and other outboard and it's gonna cost hundreds for just the cabling. You also need to have decent converters otherwise it's not gonna help your mixes to move OTB. It's not worth getting cheap cables and crap converters, you need to commit to doing it right.

Gotta say though, when someone walks into the room the desk is always the first thing they comment on! Here's a few pics

Nice!

I always see boards for sale on my CL for super cheap, but then I have to remind myself of the cost of repairing anything, fixing it up and buying all the cables to make it all work. I have the I/O to do it, but it'd have to have killer preamps/EQs for me to ever really consider it.

Talked to Wheatstone, looks like mine is practically new electronically. Only 2 old channels and the rest have been replaced with wonderful transformer i nput goodness. Only problems are VU bulbs out and one phantom power not working. Amazing deal. Here's some tear down pics.

I found a studio that uses one in great shape. Mine is bigger but this sure looks sexy.

looks surprisingly simple to disassemble.

The closest i've gotten to a deal like this was finding a Arrakis broadcast mixer on the ground in dayton, oh. no power supply and i thought i would just keep it for parts, but amazingly ended up selling it on ebay for $550.

FUCK you, that's such a great looking piece of gear. Super stoked for you, I really hope you let us know the sounds you get out of it!

I thought the same but in reality, if you get a modular one with a layout like mine, any parts are super cheap to find at even radioshack (minus the pots). It just takes patience and a little learning. The wiring and stuff is expensive but honestly, it's pointless these days. I've decided to use this for monitoring during tracking, summing, light EQ, and just a master volume knob. Pretty simple setup. That's why these older broadcast consoles are great...they're basic!
