I know Howard Jones has a great voice.

However, I am believing that there is some processing going on to help him get that "brutal" sound, but I can not identify it specifically. I realize there is the usual layering and compression and so forth, but there is something else happening. It doesn't sound like typical distortion or overdrive. It's subtle in places, and more obvious in others.

Can anyone shed some light on what this might be?

Doesn't sound like anything other than a little overdrive and a nice mic to me as far as processing goes. Hey, maybe he's just really good?

I saw them live and he sounds the same. Doesn't sound super processed to me really...

What was the guitar setup for this album anyway? Great tone!

Framus Cobra amps, (I think) Cobra cabs with Maxon OD-808. Caparison Dellingers with EMG 85s.

I heard Framus Cobra (or dragon, I cannot remember) and Peavey 5150 and Maxon OD-808 of course. Unearth used the same setup, but the different Framus than KSE's.

I personally like Jesse Leach's shouting / screaming / singing better than Howard's on the older songs (especially the singing vocals - My Last Serenade for example), but I really like Howard's vocals on the songs on End Of Heartache. I'm not a "metalcore" (or whatever you want to call it) fan either. They do a good job mixing in catchy and fairly aggressive riffing into poppy-sounding songs. I just can't get into the breakdowns.

i agree, i liked jesse better. but howard is really good too. just different. have you heard jesse's new band, seemless. really different than what he did in killswitch. i saw them a few weeks ago and just about everyone in the place said it sounded just like danzig, really good danzig. didnt expect that.

no - thats pretty much normal howard on the record
Cool. There is a line in the song "The End of Heartache", "You know me all too well" that he doubles in a non human sounding voice. Is that done the same way?

Also, could anyone clue me in as to what the vocal effect is on the bridge of Metallica's "Through the Never'?

if you like Jones and think that in 'The end...' he has a frightening voice, then you should check out the Blood has been Shed albums....

..that's screaming!!!!

andy mixed both killswitch records and also mastered the second as well(not sure about the first).
im pretty sure lamb of god still uses mesa mark 4 heads. at least in killadelphia they were.

Mark Morton definitely uses a Mesa Mark IV as of a recent Guitar World issue. I will be seeing Sounds of the Underground on Friday so I will confirm.

Their amp setup has been discussed a million times on Harmony Central, this is exactly what they used, coming straight from the band...

-4 total guitar tracks
-2 tracks of a modded Peavey 5150 (crunch channel) + VHT 4x12 cab
-2 tracks of a Framus Dragon + Mesa Recto 4x12

Both rigs were boosted with a Maxon OD808 pedal. They played Caparison guitars.

Seems like overkill does it not?

Then I supppose overkill is the way to go sometimes :Spin:
