Greetings everybody, ive been thinking about the new up and comming metal bands and how they all take the melodic route in making songs, and i was thinking.. is this the end of metal? as time passes true metal seems like its weithering away with these popish sounds that MTV has been pumping into our populus. I geuss this thread is to start a conversation on what you all think of this.
thnx   :bah:

Oh, get real.

Do you know how often I've heard people trying to write off Heavy Metal? People said this back in 1992 when Nirvana was going through the roof. People said this in the early 80's when New Wave was the big fad.

Heavy Metal still reaches people around the globe. Just because the mainstream press decides that it's not cool anymore doesn't mean that it's dead. They continue to try to write it off and then some band (i.e. Pantera in 1994 with the release of Far Beyond Driven) breaks into the charts with a high placement and everyone suddenly gets on the bandwagon, again. They're nothing but a bunch of trend followers trying to increase their bottom line. The end.

Yeah, Metal does incorporate other influences. If it didn't, I don't think it would have lasted as long as it has. Sure, some bands have more melody than others. Who cares?

No. There has always been and always will be a cheapened version of every genre of music made for mainstream acceptance.. It doesn't mean anything is dying.

@starter: what is so "unmetal" about melody and how is "true metal" not melodic? you make no sense dude. metal is metal. its a genre, and it cannot be destroyed no matter how many bands get on MTV, there will be those that do not, and choose not to. there is mainstream and counter in every genre and this maintains the balance.

thnx for the reply, all i was stating was that mainstream media was doing this and i was asking what you guys thought about it, and for the melodic topic, yes alot of bands are more melodic than others and thats fine but when these bands do it just because its the thing to do to get famouse in the metal genre industry is what i was trying to get at. and thats not what metal is about. i think that came out right...... o_O
thnx again

Metal is nowhere near lost, however I'm a little wary of what's currently happening with Melodic Death Metal. Old bands like Dark Tranquillity have stuck to their roots and newer bands like Nightrage are coming out with fresh material but even more are becoming like In Flames and making horrible music now that somehow gains them mainstream acceptance. Make good music and don't get shit, make bad music and you get the world, ironic isn't it?

For examples from other communities....

In the jazz community you have Kenny G and other pop-jazz people. In the classical community you have classical pianists turned pop singer-songwriters. Classical music fans have enough to deal with anyway since people are so ignorant about classical music.

Metal will never die. Theres always gonna be guys out there who just need to get up and jam. As far as the melodic stuff gos, I dig alot of it, but I like a mixture. I think ZAO represents a good mixture of heavy/melodic metal.

Heavy metal? No way; it's very close to rock music, so will endure as long as rock does. Although rock does seem to finally be boring even its musicians, so it's hard to tell.

Death and black metal? Most definitely in decline. They will shortly be absorbed by radio metal which is part grunge, part rap, part death metal and part punk.

I don't know what you're talking about.

i dont see a fall of metal, bands just change and move on. There will always be new bands anyway (pantera for example) which will catch peoples attention when the scene feels a bit low.

Personally im not worried as i go to many metal shows which have full attendence crowds and a great atmospher.

How does melodic mean mainstream? Mainstream is tune down 8 steps (excluding meshuggah) and play 4 notes then dress like monkeys

I am 36 years old. I have a kid and a wife, yet my biggest hobby is still metal music and that is not about to change anytime soon. I can't say what the future of metal is, but when I die, you will have to pry my current fave metal CD from my cold dead hands. As long as I am on this earth metal lives as far as I am concerned.

yes. :worship:

Metal I feel has established itself as a constant music no matter what trends are going on. It will grow and shrink in popularity but that doesnt even matter, there will always be metal somewhere. It might not be the glory days anymore, but so what.

Hi Mr. triellan666

I am not quite sure of your definition of metal or even the sense of your question? Do you worry about the allegiance of metal players to traditionnal harmony or the end of harmony discoveries in metal???

You'll be happy to learn that metal artists have only discover a fragment of 12 tones music harmony (in other words the opposite of traditionnal harmony)
and Schoenberg's music. Which means.....Metal can get more devastating then it is now.

Metal is only beginning...after all, we only have 55 years of Rock history.
