Am I correct in assuming this is a concept album? I have heard some refer to it as this in the past. If it is, I'm curious if anybody knows what it's about or if they know where there is a good analysis of the album. Thanks.

I'll be very brief here: No, I don't think so. Although there are certain thematic connections between the songs on the album, that applies to virtually every DT album in one way or another, and The Gallery lacks a specific overall "story" or "direction" to mark it as a concept album. I have a faint recollection that the band has said something along the lines of "none of our albums are concept-albums per se" in an old interview, but as my memory is as bad as always, I can't tell where that interview was.

So tell me how The Gallery is a concept album.

Concept album are pretty lame as a concept, I never even put
any thought to the wether an album is a concept album or not,
makes no difference what-so-ever. It's kinda the same reason
I dislike Opeth, I would end up thinking of the album as one
long guitar wanking session and that is never good...

Even so, I know I have some concept albums, like Crimson Idol,
but I don't think of it as such, I listen to the songs as singles and
judge them on their own merit, not by how well they fit the supposed
concept the band came up with. After all, all music is "in the eye of
the beholder".

DT oughta do a concept album. It seems like something they'd do well.

Niklas once, when asked "have you guys ever thought of creating a concept album?", during a chat session, said

"Not really...not in recent years anyway. Things like that (concept albums) can easily end up being way too pretentious for their own good. but if we find a suitable concept, we might investigate further - who knows?"

(btw I agree with you, I think they'd do the best concept album of all times. But if they don't feel like it, it's far better if they don't).

i think there is a difference between a concept album and an album with recurring themes, or even one whose songs are all about the same topic. a concept album is a record where all the tracks tell a story, and - as salmy pointed out - it's not really much more than a lame idea unless you're an amazing storyteller with a wonderful plot in mind. then again, if you're an amazing storyteller with a wonderful plot in mind, you're much more likely to want to write a novel or a short story.

on the other hand, it's perfectly possible than a number of the songs on the gallery deal with the same subject, but so do some of those on projector, damage done and the mind's i as well. i'm not that sure about the cohesion in skydancer and haven, but if you want recurring themes, dt won't leave you needy.
