The Geek Hierarchy: How many squares can you color in?

Most furries start off enjoying animals, and the imagination of being half-animal half-human. Disney certainly has made tons of money based on people's general enjoyment of those ideas. I'd say that most furies just enjoy that part of it. You do have a huge community that enjoys the sexual sides of it, and like the goth cruises, the furry cons, for some people, can be a place to practice more open sexuality.

If you look at the number of people playing Taurens in World of Warcraft, to the various races in EQ2, to many other games 'furry' based imagination is pretty high.

I'm excluded long before you get to the Furries on though. ;)

Ten.

Eleven, really, considering I WAS a 13 yr old gamer... with an Atari...

(missed 12 onaccounta not officially ever signing up for SCA, though I've been to a few events)

Just the fact that you KNEW about this con is kind of disturbing.

Actually, I just had to deny them a fan-table at Dragon*Con this year. (We're fully booked for 2010.) They were the first request I got last year for D*C 2009.

Though at this point I'd add Avatards onto that list and put them right below the furry fans because that fanbase has to be one of the most annoying ones in recent memory.

"Avatards." That is a word I will cherish for the ages. Thanks!

Thanks for almost keeping me company on the sacred geekdom pedestal.

A whopping ten:

Sci-fi/fantasy lit fan
Amateur sci-fi/fantasy writer (I count this because I get *really* enthusiastic about the backstories of the various PnP games I've run.)
" " Artist - I do a lot of pixel art (see my avatar), 90% of of it either involves robots or guys holding swords.
Video Gamer
Roleplaying gamer
LARPer (fuck you.)
SCA folk
People who buy expensive Replicas
Comic Book Fan
Heinlein Fan

I'm wondering if 'power metal' fans should be on this chart somewhere. It it were I'd have gone...to eleven.

AS for starfire pulling out of Atlanta:
Oh god, it's not forever, is it? I've probably bought 5 pieces from your booth.

10.

If only I had actually bought that Clan MacLeod sword.... wait, my husband bought it, so do I get that point too?

Power Metal fans probably should be on the list.
Also, I wonder if Neko culture and Second Life can be considered Furry and Video Games. If so, make that 14 @_@

Yeah, they won't be returning. After seeing the number of crafters who have either pulled out or whose booths are for sale -- cheap! -- this past weekend, I can't say I'm surprised.

I probably know you...heck, I probably sold you a few of those. :)

haha ok...14

Crap! I am Officially Defeated.
Congrats, punk! --I think.

Hmm, on second thought, I'm re-counting:

1. Sci-Fi/Fantasy Author ("White Wolf's Awakening" in Tales of the White Wolf -- an Anthology of Elric Stories)
2. Sci-Fi Lit Fan
3. Heinlein Fan
4. RenFaire Folk
5. Video Gamer
6. Role-play Gamer (although not lately)
7. People Who Read Books Based on Sci-Fi TV shows
8. Fan-Fic Writer (I suppose I'm automatically ineligible for the "amateur writer" slot since I was paid by the word)
9. Fan-Fic Writers Who Put Themselves Into the Story
10. Sci-Fi TV Fan
11. Trekkie
12. Anime Fan Who Doesn't Care About Subtitles (but prefers them as an option :))
13. Anime Fan Who Uses the Term "Japanimation" -- but only with audiences who don't know what "animé" means

hmmm..... No-Mercy still defeats me (how?!?!) unless I lay claim to "Erotic fan-fic writer," but in fairness, any Wraeththu story might seem erotic to an outsider so it shouldn't count. :)

So, I sort-happily admit defeat.

Personally I think LARPers should get more respect than they do. Because they have the guts to do what they do out on the street in public. They don't hide behind a screen or in a basement. (well, maybe part of the time...but the point is they put themselves - literally - into it and show themselves to the world outside)

Shit, I have no Idea how I missed the "Sci-fi TV fan" and "trekkie" boxes. Count me to 12!

It's been a few years since I've been. Any reason why so many folks are pulling out? I live pretty close to the site now... They should consider renting it out in the off-season, weddings, corporate events and what-have-you. That sucks, but such is life. I stopped by that booth for probably 8 years consecutive and drooled 'til I got the cash to take some of it home with me.

I just checked the link in your sig, and yes, as a matter of fact you sold me an axe, and you sold my Cousin a rather expensive piece of curved steel with a rapier hilt, for a pretty hefty sum. He and another gentleman had been ogling it on and off all day. The gentlemans wife looked rather pleased when my cousin bought it out from under him. The stranger, however, lamented vocally. T'was pretty entertaining.

Oh, I don't know about that. When you start hearing stories about how a lady cheating on her boyfriend and used the excuse "But I was in character!...you sorta have to question the integrity of your peers.*
Okay to be fair that only happened a couple of times, and it was the same person in both scenarios, but still. They're a motley sort, but I'm a bit of a motley character myself.

It's something I recommend any Geeky-enough person to try at least once. There's a very strong DIY aspect to the costuming and weapon "smithing" the people are generally very welcoming and outgoing, and you'd be surprised at the types of people you come across. You can even 'set up shop' and sell stuff like costuming or armor. Bought a chainmail shirt for like 40 bucks, later sold it for $50 and, 20 in-game "gold".

*But I'm not *that* motley.

I don't disagree, actually; I was chuckling WITH the LARPer's comment rather than at it. I have a lot of friends who are involved in LARPing (SOLAR, etc.) and for the most part, it looks like good, clean fun.

Take 'em. They're almost 'gimme' boxes in MY world. :heh:

The existence of 'hard' booths and the fact that they're constructed by the vendors and crafters makes that kinda hard.
At a 'soft' Faire, like the new one in Raleigh NC, which consists basically of tents in a field or fairgrounds, it's more likely to be a seasonal or temporary operation. The Raleigh one is especially weird since there are two "off" weeks in the middle of a 6-week run. (!)

That sucks, but such is life. I stopped by that booth for probably 8 years consecutive and drooled 'til I got the cash to take some of it home with me.

Many drooled. Toward the end, not quite enough got the cash to take 'em home.

Is your cousin named Adam? I know him...not surprising since he and his family and friends probably dropped $3,000 at our booth during the last decade. :) I'd better email him and tell him we're not at Faire any more.

That was a one-of-a-kind piece, too. Err, being handmade they're all theoretically "one-of-a-kind," but that particular item was a unique one-off made by our mastersmith. And yeah, it was pricey. I was gonna get it if no-one bought it by the second weekend of Faire. :)

If you post a pic of yourself, I'll bet I'll say "Oh, yeah, I remember that guy!"

lol, I didn't think his taste in music was anywhere close to ours....but then again, I just assume that 98% of the people I know wouldn't be into music like ours.

I recognize you, yep. I think you're in at least one of my booth-pics from a prior Faire. PM me his FB, if you could. (The world gets even smaller...apparently one of your extended family used to own the house right across from the house I bought in Auburn. :))

EDIT: maybe not. I was thinking you were in Photo #38 on this page, but maybe not. However, note the famous metal vocalist in #31, and the precursor to later metal nuptials in #32. :)

Actually that is a 19 year old me on the left, but I've lost a good bit of weight, and have grown more facial hair since then.

Links being sent, btw.
