actually i find this one a bit of a disappointing experience after the joke-intensive "the last hero" and the philosophically-challenging "thief of time"... it's maybe because terry likes vimes so much that he cannot really manage to ridicule him in any funny way, and the plots get somber, the lines get more savvy and less fresh.
when will we see the likes of rincewind again, or at least one book devoted to the adventures of uu faculty members? *sigh*
