Yes, I know the HAUNTED have their very first, original vocalist back in the ranks, and it doesnt really excite me that much. This band was one of those rare occasions where the replacement vocalist was better than the original, at least in my eyes. So, when I first heard that Peter Dolving was back in the fold, it honestly felt like an ehhh moment. And I continue to think that after delving into the album. Ehhh
The songs included here dont really seem to go anywhere, and really do sound alike. Hardcore flavored metal, with influences from AT THE GATES. Been there, done that. And so have the HAUNTED. In fact, most of the album sounds just like the debut album, which was not their best in my opinion. Although, they fall flat when they do try something different, adding some alternative tinges to some of the tracks. At least they tried. There is nothing on here that really strikes my fancy, or catches my attention at least. And, this from a band that I have always taking a liking to. I personally thought that The Haunted Made Me Do It was a tremendous album and includes some of my top personal favorite songs, and this comes no where even close to that caliber. This album has influences of past the HAUNTED greatness, but it is filled with way too much filler to appease the new metal heads that think that SHADOWS FALL are the next big coming of the metal gods. While not a horrible album and it is definitely filled with some killer guitar melodies, like the old school Swedes perfected so many years ago, but overall, it somehow falls flat. I dont know if it is the fact that of the vocals, as I dealt with them on their debut release, yet somehow, they just seem to drag it down somewhat. This is really not something that I will listen to over again, and I need that in an album nowadays. If you are a fan of what they call mall metal these days, you will be loving this, but for me, I am feeling a bit jaded.
