The Importance of Bass Guitar In Metal Music

^ + 100

And, oh yea another thing - Steve DiGiorgio. Imagine Death without him. Symphony X without LePond. The Who without John Entwistle. Cream without Jack Bruce. Cannibal Corpse without Alex Webster. Queensryche without Eddie 'fast fingers' Jackson......

Bass players mould the band.

Just addressing comments made by several in this thread about meshuggah and 8 string guitars/bass, their bass player is REALLY fucking loud on most of their cds, especially the remix of "Nothing". I think he's one of the most upfront in the mix bass players in all of metal, tbph, and always has been - Chaosphere's bass parts are thunderous. If you can identify the tone, he's honestly louder than the guitars and immediately obvious once you know what you're listening for. It's hard to describe, but it's a more roaring, fuzzy, gritty sound that has a clear metallic pick impact to most of the notes which provides a sharp contrast from the MUCH more thin, biting and treble-y guitars. One of the few parts in the album where the bass disconnects from the guitars a bit is in the melodic part of "Straws pulled at random" at about 3 minutes, you can hear the strange metallic bass tone pretty clearly and alone there. He does play the notes in the same register much of the time, but it's a very different sound. Check out the live videos that are on the second disc of the nothing remix for an especially obvious bass sound display.

hmm just listen to and justice for all, the raw, sort of "thin" or "shallow" sound is perfect of example of music that has little to no bass

On the "One" single there is a 4 track (2 guitars, vocals and drums) demo of "One". This sounds so much thinner than the album even. Shows that bass turned down is still much better than no bass.

Yes, we would have to stretch our imagination with that one, considering there are quite a few Death albums he wasn't on.

He was involved in the writing and pre-production of everything from Human to The Sound of Perseverance. Some of his original basslines are still intact and were played by the bass player at the time of recording.
