The Mars Volta - Amputechture

I have progressively liked each release more than the last, but it wasn't until Frances The Mute that I thought they were pretty damn good. So here's hoping they keep up with that trend!

And funny that a disturbingly high percentage of their fanbase is unfamiliar with the albums that birthed them (Larks Tongues, Relayer, Tago Mago, The Inner Mounting Flame, etc.)...looking forward to it of course, provided they curb some of the excesses on the last one (i.e. cut the noise/ambience for its own sake.)

I don't even like The Mars Volta but I think these noisy moments fit well, it gave the album 'respirations' .Many disagree of course :)

here's hoping it's better than FtM, which i find less listenable now than when i got it...haven't listened in a while though, maybe i should go back. first one's still >>>>

edit: errr...why the link? i can't find anything on that site related to this...

Much like newbie Opeth fans in regards to Mikael's audio collection.

It's probably Can's best album. They are experimental/krautrock. Kind of like Faust I guess. Shits all over anything The Mars Volta have ever done.

Ditto; future days is great also. Out of the few so-called experimental bands I listen to Kayo Dot reigns supreme as opposed to Mars Volta who are not that great at all on the long run. That said, I prefer FTM to De Loused.

Jesus fucking christ Frances the Mute is such a perfect album. Unbelievably so. Very much looking forward to this.

I found it odd that they claimed Frances the Mute was written as one continous song so that the listener could get more involved, but at the end of every song there was a couple of minutes of ambient wanking that made me want to skip to the next song. I have heard it was a different story live.

Bump...It's out now, and it cuts Frances The Mute into little pieces. Best album yet, believe it or not there's not one track that I'd call overlong (well, the near-title track does constantly threaten to fall apart, but in the most fascinating way) and much of the playing is downright sick, especially on the two longest tracks. 9/10...denied a 10 because I still feel like strangling Cedric when goes into castrate mode or distorts his voice, and that dumb stop-start chorus on Vermicide.

Gave it a fair number of listens, and I can say it's better than Frances the Mute, but there's still something about the flow of the album that I don't like. There's too many sudden changes within the songs that disrupt the natural feel of it, and shows emphasis on their love of studio trickery. I also have some other issues with the overall production, like how there's just too much and any sense of dynamics seem to have gone out the window. Musically, though, it's impressive.
