On the old Opeth logo, there is a horizontal line that crossed the "p". Is the meant to be an upside down cross?

funny thing.....Death did the same thing with their logo. The original death logo had an upside down cross, and then Chuck Schuldiner revamped it without the cross.

From the Opeth biography:

As you might understand I was more or less influenced by the occult back then, although in no serious manner. Music wise I was really into the twisted, dark, and evil-sounding riffs. The lyrics written by both me and David were pure Satanic chantings!

They were just influenced a lot by the death metal scene I guess.

if opeth is not a satanic band, why would they have an inverted cross as part of their logo?

Money, "coolness", etc. If they're not into Christianity it's a way to say "Fuck all this stupid organised religion crap".

But mostly it was to look cool to the people buying records. Deicide have made a fortune out of it you know, and Benton really doesn't worship Satan. Hey, Satanists really don't.

So satanist bands write music for money and coolness, while bands writing love songs do it for artistic credibility? I find it hard to believe Opeth was trying to be cool and make money back in 1993.

That logo was actually the reason mike joined Opeth. They wanted to be the most evil sounding band in the world back then. I agree it would be great if they used the old logo once just for variation...
