Welcome to the official thread of the Triumvirate Of The Scarlet Twilight, a secret organization of three black mages (Eligos, Goffdahl, and I) dedicated to conquering this forum and spreading their message of atmospheric and slightly progressive black death kvltness.

...Actually, we're just three semi-pretentious metalheads with similar tastes in metal. And I figured, hell, why not make a thread where we can discuss everything related to our preferences ? (basically everything leaning towards the black, atmospheric, progressive, and epic sides of metal)

So let's begin... :kickass:

-----

I'm gonna start this thread off by talking about a band I've been listening to lately: Paysage D'Hiver. I'm gonna go off on a bit of a pretentious analysis over here and make a very broad claim. Paysage D'Hiver's 15-minute ambient opus "Inneres Licht", which is apparently a cover of Urfaust's "In Den Weiten Oden Raumen" but with a different keyboard tone and some other variations, might be one of the greatest pieces of music ever written. Then again it may not be written at all, just felt and played.

You see, I was listening to this song a couple of nights ago, and did the whole "shut the lights off and close your eyes" thing, which I often do with full albums, and I realized just how special this song is. It's one of those songs that can adapt itself to any emotion you're feeling at the time you listen to it. Other music can do this as well, like the ending to Moonsorrow's "Tuleen Ajettu Maa" which sounds either happy or sad to me based on whatever I'm feeling. But what makes "Inneres Licht" so different is that it subtly changes very slowly and doesn't necessarily command your attention. It doesn't force itself upon you with epic bombast like Moonsorrow's "V: Havitetty", which is probably my favorite album. Instead, it develops so slowly that it allows you mind to truly think and wander.

And I know how pretentious and ANUS-like I'm starting to sound, but hell, it allows you to feel really spiritual as well. It pushes your mind just enough so that it thinks about your life, and fantasizes beyond that, while a song like "Tuleen Ajettu Maa" might force you to imagine a great battle, etc. I remember the first time I listened to "Inneres Licht" I honestly felt like I was astrally projected into the body of a 19th century Swiss man waking up in the middle of the night in his snowy Alpine cabin, and watching his wife and child sleep in peace. And on other listens my mind has wandered to reliving other personal experiences, thinking about others and putting myself in their shoes, cosmic experiences, etc. Cheesy? Yeah kind of when you think about it a lot. But when you actually listen to the song in the right atmosphere, you really understand what I'm talking about.

The point is that no other band can do that to me with their music. Listen, other music is just as awesome, but emotionally commanding music like, say, Warning does just that. It commands you to think of certain experiences. Paysage D'Hiver's music evolves itself so slowly that it allows your mind to travel on its own. So that is why, despite me only having one album by him and satiating my desire for his music on youtube and myspace, I honestly might be willing to say that Paysage D'Hiver might be my favorite band.

...Dear God I really am pretentious as fuck.

If anyone wants to join our little society over here, go ahead and pm your music tastes to Eligos, Goffdahl, and I and we shall review your credentials. :heh:

How interesting. I'm not a big fan of these newer kinds of black metal offshoots, as for me the line between atmospheric precision (musical seams that allow for development) and directionless muzak (trading water in one single mood) is often crossed by the majority of these bands. However, I can connect to the way you give in completely to the music. This often makes the tributes one pays cheesy-sounding, but that's preferable to cold dissection made by poser faggots who are afraid to seem naive by showing emotion and fascination towards art.

I was really big on Paysage d'Hiver a couple years ago and enjoyed listening to them this winter. They really have the whole cold atmosphere mechanic on puppet strings at this point. Though there are plenty of bands that apply this atmosphere, Paysage d'Hiver is definitely in the top 3.

Since I like to relate any band to the German scene, I'd like to take a moment to praise Lunar Aurora's Andacht. A couple days ago, we had an unexpected snow storm, and I chose to listen to these heathens. They push the boundaries of the genre with the best black metal breakdown I've ever heard and remarkably gory sound clips of a sword battle.

tl;dr

Yeah, Paysage D'Hiver and Lunar Aurora are both excellent. I have yet to hear Inneres Licht but this is on my urgent to do list. Andacht is a great album but the best Lunar Aurora have made is no doubt their split with... Paysage D'Hiver :) "A Haudiga Fluag" is one of the most enthralling pieces of music!

Just returned from Lithuania today and now I relax with some S.V.E.S.T. in the speakers. Nice!

Last weekend I attended Ragnarök Festival and although there was a certain amount of cheesy toungue-in-cheek casio keyboard bands at the festival, there were also some personal favourites. Helrunar played a fantastic concert and their new tracks promise for an excellent upcoming release! Skyforger played an all folk concert and a metal concert the day after. Both concerts were awesome - the new tracks sounded a bit too polished and catchy imo, but classics like "Kauja Pie Plakaniem, Kauja Pie Veisiem" and especially "Sesas Arprata Dienas" made the concert very great. Other great performances were Solstafir, the Windir show from Vreid, Gorgoroth, and Wolves in the Throne Room.

annnnnddd what about people like me, cook-ta and V5 (and a couple others I'm forgetting) who have been espousing the good-out there-forward-thinking-progressive-avant garde-fuck you black metal for years

Am I the only one that thinks all this hatred towards the American black metal scene is unwarranted? There a plenty of great American black metal bands, and a lot of the scene seems to have a distinct sound that I can't quite put my finger on. I wanna say it has a bit of a traditional heavy metal influence.

Schwarzung, Hail! The Wizard, challenge_everything

I considered inviting a few of you but ASD and Goffdahl also share my taste in post metal and folk metal.

Didn't know Paysage D'Hiver, the song you posted sounds great.

The three other bands you mentioned also sound good. I'm a fan of the american black metal bands, lots of quality stuff.

You can't have new members or it's not a triumvirate anymore silly

What about people who like it but are hideously uneducated?

Really, this whole e-organization thing is really stupid. It makes you look stupid.

EDIT: but i really like that Blood Storm song.

Really? This saddens me! We have founded our Triumvirate in complete and utter seriousity and had hoped for the ultimate envy and approval from you all! Or... Not.

Relax, it's just bullshit - and a kickstarter for some cool discussions about some great music :kickass:

Listening to the new Agrypnie now btw. It's nothing new compared to the two former albums but the tracks are somewhat more epic and solid. Go listen! Now!
