Die musikalische Entwicklung Theatres des Vampires ist schon erstaunlich, klangen die ersten Alben der Italiener doch noch schwer nach Black Metal mit leichter Cradle of Filth-Schlagseite. Davon ist anno 2005 nicht mehr viel übrig geblieben, im Gegenteil, der Gothic Metal mit Einflüssen aus dem Deathrock klingt deutlich eigenständiger und auch der Wechsel hin zu Sängerin Sonya Scarlet hat dem Gesamtsound der Band hörbar gut getan. Fraglich auch, ob Theatres des Vampires mit ihrem alten Sänger überhaupt in der Lage gewesen wäre, solch überragende und stimmungsvolle Songs wie beispielsweise Solitude zu schreiben, das eingerahmt in ruhige und symphonische Klänge ein mitreissendes Duett beinhaltet, oder Let Me Die mit seinen elektronischen Versatzstücken, bei dem Theatres des Vamipres sich in bislang musikalisch unerforschtes Neuland begeben. Auch Black Mirror überzeugt mit seiner symphonischen Komponente und Siouxsie & The Banshees-Einflüssen. Erwähneneswert fraglos auch der Remix des Titelstückes Pleasure And Pain von Bruno Kramm oder die klassischen Einflüsse beim Bonustrack Mater Tenebrarum, das die unspektakulären Klassik-Adaptionen Therions der letzten Jahre um Längen schlägt. Pleasure And Pain ist wieder einmal eine kaum mehr für möglich gehaltene Leistungssteigerung der Italiener und das mit Abstand beste Album aus dem Theatres des Vampires. 10/10 - MK

Ritorno in pompa magna per i Theatres Des Vampires, band nostrana divenuta nel corso degli anni vera entità di riferimento del panorama italico per quel che concerne l'estetica musicale a cavallo tra metal ed elementi gotico-vampireschi; Pleasure And Pain incarna il settimo sigillo di un carriera discografica intensa, attualmente patrocinata, dopo anni di accasamento presso le scuderie della Blackend/PHD, dall'italianissima Dreamcell 11, costola della a dir poco attiva Aural Music. Dopo numerosi cambi di line up nel corso degli anni e l'abbandono in tempi relativamente recenti del singer Alexander a favore di progetti solisti, i vampiri si sono attestati su una formazione a cinque elementi, con la singer Sonya Scarlet in veste di unica interprete delle partiture vocali, nonostante non manchino illustri guest targati Stormlord, Ancient e Necrodeath. La scelta della Scarlet quale unica interprete narrante pare riflettersi chiaramente anche nelle scelte compositive del combo italiano, tra l'altro caratterizzate dagli albori del 1995 ad oggi da una costante estetica evolutiva. I Theatres Des Vampires attuali denotano infatti un sempre più progressivo allontanamento dalla radice compositiva prettamente metal, ormai ridotta ai minimi termini, a favore di un approccio molto più gotico e darkeggiante; sulle chitarre prevalgono dunque sample e partiture tastieristiche, spesso di chiara scuola dark e ben intrecciate col cantato di Sonya Scarlet, nonostante quest'ultimo lasci trasparire alcune forzature eccessive in taluni passaggi. Molto poco potente, quasi per forza di cose, la produzione, eccessivamente linda e forse anche per questo dal sapore plastico, nel contesto di un lavoro che potrebbe facilmente adescare l'attenzione di chi soffre il fascino del gothic metal più digeribile e inscindibilmente legato ad un'estetica filosofica fatta di vampirismo, cultura dark e sangue sintetico a fiumi. Interessante il bonus remix della title track per mano di Bruno Kramm, seminale alchimista dei Das Ich, brano che va a chiudere l'album assieme a "Mater Tenebrarum", cover song aggiuntiva e forse unico pezzo davvero gothic nel significato del termine più classicamente accostabile al metal.

Italialainen Theatres Des Vampires viettää kymmenvuotis-juhliaan ja mikä olisikaan tähän hetkeen sopivampaa kuin julkaista seitsemäs albumillinen vampyyriaiheista goottimetallia. Oudommaksi vuosipäivän tekee se tosiasia, että bändin entinen sielu ja voimanlähde Lord Vampyr Alexander otti ja lähti soolouralle ennen albumin tekoa. Mihin vokalisti Sonya Scarlet, kitaristi Robert, basisti Zimon Lijoi, kosketisoittaja Fabian ja rumpali Gabriel ovat siis yltäneet ilman entistä johtajaansa? Lienee sanomattakin selvää että Pleasure And Pain on todellinen näytön paikka jäljelle jääneille synkistelijöille.
Hämmästyttävää kyllä Theater Des Vampires tuntuu silminnähden virkistyneen sitten viime vuonna julkaistun Nightbreed Of Macabria pitkäsoiton, jolla bändi kuulosti hetkittäin suorastaan huolestuttavan väsähtäneeltä ja tehottomalta. Pleasure And Pain on edeltäjäänsä verrattuna etenkin ehyempi kokonaisuus ilman turhia kappaleita tai (väärällä tavalla) kuolleita hetkiä. Uudistettu soundimaailma onnistuu samanaikaisesti kuulostamaan aiempaa huomattavasti modernimmalta ja klassisemmalta. Tästä suuri kiitos kuuluu kekseliäästi käytetyille koskettimille sekä suoremmille kauhu-vaikutteille, jotka tuovat sitä kaivattua verenmakua vampyyrilauman puuhiin. Yhtye ei tätä kirjoitettaessa ole vielä kiinnittänyt uutta miesvokalistia ja levylläkin kaikki miespuoliset vokaalit hoidetaan vierastyövoimalla.
Yhdeksän virallista raitaa ja kaksi välittömästi näiden perään soivaa bonusbiisiä ovat kelpo joukko melodisia goottisävellyksiä, joissa kitara ja koskettimet tekevät tauotta työtä. Ratkaisut eivät ehkä ole kaikkein innovatiivisimpia, mutta Theatres Des Vampires osaa kierrättää genrensä ideoita tehokkaasti ja tuoreella otteella. Biisit kestävät lähes poikkeuksetta kolmesta ja puolesta neljään ja puoleen minuuttia, joten mitään suurimittaisia teoksia kiekolta ei löydy. Huippuhetkiksi muodostuvat ensimmäisenä soiva Pleasure And Pain, tunnelmoivampi Solitude, ilkeästi rockaava ja koukukkaaksi osoittautuva Forever In Death sekä oopperamainen lainaraita Mater Tenebranum.

Pleasure And Pain è il settimo studio album per i romani Theatres Des Vampires, il primo che vede la line-up orfana del singer Alexander (che abbiamo ascoltato di recente con il suo progetto Lord Vampyr) e con le vocals affidate in toto allavvenente fron-girl Sonya Scarlet.
Ciò che subito si nota è un allontanamento ormai totale dal black metal delle passate release a favore di un gothic moderno e romantico.
Il disco (sul quale segnaliamo la presenza di diversi ospiti, tra cui Flegias dei Necrodeath e Bruno Kramm dei Das Ich, che si è occupato di remixare lopener Pleasure And Pain) è senzaltro ottimo da un punto di vista tecnico, Sonya si rivela inoltre una vocalist versatile e dotata di un timbro molto personale (che passa con disinvoltura dalle tonalità soffuse e lamentose a quelle più operistiche), ma il sound della band, forse a causa della recente separazione da Alexander, sembra essere ancora in cerca della sua identità definitiva.
Alcuni brani, tra cui la già citata Pleasure And Pain, Solitude, o Let Me Die, sono molto catchy e subito assimilabili dallascoltatore, qui Sonya si esprime con tonalità molto sensuali, i refrain sono romantici e gigioni quanto basta. Delle song insomma, che si distinguono per la loro immediata fruibilità. E qui sorge spontaneo un dubbio: cosa vogliono fare i nostri vampiri? Ammiccare a chi ascolta le sonorità più easy del metallo oppure creare qualcosa di più personale?
Accanto a queste tracce infatti, ve ne sono altre ove il sound dei Theatres Des Vampires si fa più complesso e sfaccettato, tra cui la più veloce e blacky Forever In Death (con tanto di riferimenti ad act noir quali Goblin, Death SS e Black Widow) o ancora Rosa Mistero, traccia ricca di pathos con una parte cantata in italiano che sembra ricalcare le atmosfere gotiche de LArcano Incantatore.
Ed è qui il problema del disco, un non ben precisato posizionamento tra sonorità romantiche e decadenti ed altre più oscure e complicate, che tuttavia non sempre riescono ad amalgamarsi a dovere, dando luogo ad episodi piuttosto trascurabili come Never Again o Reason And Sense, entrambe noiose e prive di momenti esplosivi.
Un lavoro comunque più che discreto nel suo complesso e che certamente non deluderà gli appassionati di gothic metal. Nel frattempo aspettiamo e vediamo cose decideranno di fare i Theatres Des Vampires, se abbracciare le sonorità mainstream oppure volgersi verso uno stile più complesso e personale.

L'avevo già detto in occasione della recensione del precedente album di questi vampiretti romani: il nuovo corso goticheggiante della band mi sembrava essere stato introdotto in maniera piuttosto affrettata, e aspettavo il nuovo lavoro per dare un giudizio definitivo. "Pleasure And Pain" è finalmente arrivato e, pur conservando i tratti principali del suo predecessore, vira nuovamente in un'altra direzione semplificando l'approccio sinfonico ed orchestrale di "Nightbreed In Macabria". Aggiungiamo a questo il fatto che il cantante Alexander ha abbandonato definitivamente la band per dedicarti al suo progetto solista Lord Vampyr (ripescate il "De Vampyrica Philosophia" recensito su queste stesse pagine), lasciando di fatto il centro della scena alla bella e brava Sonya Scarlet. Il fattore semplificazione rende "Pleasure And Pain" già più assimilabile, pur non contribuendo a dare linfa ad uno dei punti negativi che avevo già sottolineato in passato per i Theatres Des Vampires: la sensazione di inconcludenza delle canzoni, tutte molto belle durante l'ascolto ma assolutamente non riuscite nel momento di far venire voglia essere riascoltate. In questo caso la sensazione è ancora più marcata a causa della mancanza di una vera e propria voce maschile che dia incisività, sostituita dalla partecipazione di molti ospiti dietro il microfono (provenienti da Ancient, Ensoph, Stormlord...). Ancora una volta ci troviamo davanti ad un album riuscito a metà, che si giocherà gran parte del successo con l'accoglienza nella terra d'Albione, dove il gothic è molto più apprezzato che qui da noi e la band si è costruita una base di fan solida ed affezionata, grazie anche ad alcune provocatorie e compromettenti esibizioni live (con Sonya che si taglia le braccia e fa bere al pubblico il suo sangue). A conti fatti, Alexander ha puntato sull'estremizzazione del classico sound TDV, mentre i suoi vecchi compagni hanno optato per l'alleggerimento. Al di là delle singole scelte, Lord Vampyr vince ai punti questo primo round.

C'era molta curiosità nel vedere cosa avrebbero tirato fuori dal cilindro i Theatres Des Vampires in occasione del loro nuovo lavoro, il primo senza il membro fondatore Lord Vampyr, uscito dalla band per divergenze musicali e ora all'attivo con un progetto che porta il suo stessi nome. Chi aveva gradito la netta sferzata verso il gothic metal compiuta con Nightbreed Of Macabria non credo faticherà molto ad apprezzare anche Pleasure And Pain, che possiamo un po' considerare come la naturale prosecuzione del precedente lavoro. Per quanto mi riguarda preferisco di gran lunga quest'ultima versione della band romana, in quanto il black metal melodico/teatrale dei primi dischi francamente non mi ha mai convinto più di tanto, prigioniero com'era dei suoi stilemi vampireschi e di un songwriting troppo spesso indirizzato più alla forma che alla sostanza. Pleasure And Pain invece continua nel far emergere l'anima più romantica e decadente della band, grazie ad un sinuoso ed accattivante gothic metal moderno capace di entrarti in testa sin dai primissimi ascolti. Se vogliamo il sound si è fatto leggermente più scarno e diretto, mettendo parzialmente da parte la componente sinfonico operistica che aveva caratterizzato il precedente platter, in favore di una maggiore concretezza e attenzione al formato canzone vero e proprio.
Ed è proprio il songwriting il principale punto di forza dell'album, capace di piazzare almeno 4/5 brani di assoluto valore: è il caso ad esempio della title-track (presente anche in una versione remixata ad opera di Kramm dei Das Ich), Rosa Mistero (il pezzo migliore del disco, con una parte anche cantata in italiano), l'aggressiva Forever In Death (in cui presta la sua voce Flegias dei Necrodeath) o l' atmosferica e malinconica Reason And Sense. Ottimo l'uso delle tastiere, mai superflue e sempre complementari ai brani presenti, così come le versatili vocals della conturbante singer Sonya Scarlet, sorretta sovente da oscure backing vocals maschili.
Forse si poteva fare un' qualcosina di più per quanto riguarda la produzione, a volte un po' troppo asciutta e poco avvolgente, ma apparte questo Pleasure And Pain si dimostra come un lavoro d'indubbio valore, che ha tutte le carte in regola per affermarsi all'estero e, speriamo per una volta, anche in Italia.

Theatres Des Vampires new album 'Pleasure And Pain' is finally released. I think this band doesn't need a presentation, because they are quite famous all over Europe... This album gives a much more Gothic feel to the music. It is shorter and a more compact listen as well. Probably it's much more commercial then their old albums... and I'm sure some people will not like that! But personally I don't care... because it's a fucking brilliant music.
It's well produced, very clean and easy to listen... Theatres des Vampires show to everybody that they knows how to play their instruments. They are great musician for sure, no doubt about this.
The biggest change is the voice. This is mainly due to the fact that Scarlet now takes centre stage in the vocal parts and she proves admirably proficient on album. The atmospheres of this album are SO dark and SO deep that probably not all the people will listen to this product will fully understand that. The music style it's a kind of Dark Metal or Gothic Metal, but very different from the other bands that plays this kind of music... it's a strange mixture between Tiamat, Paradise Lost and Lacuna Coil... but probably much more darker and serious... naturally with Theatres des Vampires it's not so strange, it seems that they always takes too much seriously what they produce and their attitude!
A lots of special guest are in this new album. Were talking about: Bruno Kramm of Das Ich, Flegias of Necrodeath, Dhiloz of Ancient and members of Ensoph and Stormlord. The album contains 9 tracks and 2 bonus tracks: Pleasure And Pain, remixed by Bruno Kramm (Das Ich), and "Mater Tenebrarum (cover). The remix from Bruno Kramm it's totally awesome, honestly one of the best track remixed from Bruno Kramm I ever listen in my life... The cover of Mater Tenebrarum from Keith Emersons Inferno soundtrack it's a real masterpiece. The timing sounding very slightly different from the original track and the bombastic choruses are very well made, and give the same feeling of the original track of 1980.
Other wonderfull tracks are: Never Again, Rosa Mistero, My Lullaby and "Forever In Death"... I think that some people will love this album in a kind of religious feeling, some other will say that it's a pure shit! Theatres des Vampires like all the greatest band in the world cannot have people that stay in the middle, or you love it or you hate it... I personally love this band and this new production. I think it's their finest album and one of the best Gothic Metal album the world has to offer. Drink deep! Till the last drop of Blood!

Ormai anni luce dal sound degli esordi, i TDV tornano sulle scene con un disco che taglia definitivamente i ponti col passato, chiudendo la loro dipendenza dai Cradle Of Filth, cosa già avvenuta in grossa parte col precedente lavoro in studio. La band, ormai, suona un gothic a sfondo vampiresco, niente più black metal, nemmeno un riff, nemmeno un accenno. L'unica cosa che ancora lega i romani alla band di Dani e soci sono solo i vampiri, stop. Questo è sicuramente un buon segno, in quanto dimostra una volontà di indipendenza oggi sempre più rara nel panorama musicale mondiale. Nove brani compongono l'ossatura di questo disco, più due bonus track, ossia la cover di "Mater Tenebrarum" e un remix di Bruno Kramm dei Das Ich. Bruno non è l'unico guest musician presente su questo lavoro: qui e là danno il loro contributo al disco anche Flegias dei Necrodeath, Dhiloz degli Ancient, Nicholas degli Ensoph e Giampaolo degli Stormlord. Tutto bene quindi? Non proprio. Nonostanze cerchino di percorrere una propria strada, i TDV non riescono a creare riff davvero memorabili, nulla che lasci davvero il segno nell'ascoltatore: la contrapposizione poi delle solite voci maschili e femminili risulta a fine 2005 una delle cose più abusate in campo gothic, e non che può lasciarmi in parte l'amaro in bocca. Un disco di sicura rottura col passato, ma privo di quel mordente che avrebbe permesso alla band di fare quel salto qualitativo che avrebbe pottuto portarli in alto. Sarà per la prossima volta...

Theatres des Vampires is one of those special bands and I was happy to grab a copy of Vampyrism from one of my distributor. Last year I did an interview with them, things that I dont do too often. So here we are in 2005 with their brand new release, Pleasure and Pain. I noticed from the beginning that something happened to them and it was not the same Theatres des Vampires. True that the lead singer left the band replaced by Sonia Scarlet, a lady with a special voice, at times spoken, otherwise operatic and often quite theatrical and dramatic. Even if it says the contrary in the info I got, a male vocalist is also present. The overall sound is rawer, a bit demo like which is kind of bad because it gives some sort of dullness to the songs. Especially noticeable in the guitar department, where its role is way too much discrete and taking away the fullness of the sound pushing the vocals, bass and drums upfront. The keyboards are fine though with its sense of drama and occasional church organ rendition. Few acoustic guitar parts and clean leads here and there add to the melodic aspect of the compositions. After doing some deeper research I saw that the missing elements were the departure of forming member Alexander Lord Vampyr (vocals) and Alex on acoustic and lead guitar. I think this explains perhaps what is missing in this new Theatres des Vampires: its soul and sound. Maybe the new generation will readjust in the future and become more focused but I think the band is a bit clumsy and was not ready to release this album. The best songs are the bonus tracks Mater Tenebrarum, quite good vampiric feel and choir and the much better sounding remix version of the title track. Nonetheless, it is still a pretty good melodic and theatrical vampiric gothic opus from this new version of the Theatres des Vampires.

Mais outre les ombres, quelques invités de renom viennent en personne apporter une touche à ce "Pleasure and Pain": Bruno Kramm (DAS ICH), Flegias (NECRODEATH), Dhilez (ANCIENT) et Giampaolo (STORMLORD) contribuent - modestement - à faire de cet album quelque chose de particulier. Après un "Nightbreed of Macabria" franchement inutile et mauvais, on attendait rien de THEATRES DES VAMPIRES, combo italien qui sévit depuis 1994 et possède déjà 7 albums à son actif sans compter les démos et maxis. Après le départ en 2004 de la voix masculine du groupe, Alexander, pour se consacrer à sa carrière solo, c'est Sonya Scarlet qui récupère la quasi intégralité du chant sur "Pleasure and Pain", premier gros changement au sein du groupe. Délaissant ensuite leurs orchestrations symphoniques, le groupe a épuré sa musique pour créer des ambiances plus romantiques, plus gothiques, rappelant CHRISTIAN DEATH ou SISTERS OF MERCY en plus metal. Et autant dire que THEATRES DES VAMPIRES est bien meilleur dans ce style.
Les 9 nouvelles compos s'avèrent dans l'ensemble plutôt bien foutues, des titres comme "Pleasure and Pain", "Never Again", "Solitude", "Forever in Death" ou "Reason and Sense" sont même franchement bons et dévoilent un groupe qui peut le mieux quand il le veut. Les autres titres se situent dans un registre moyen, donnant plus l'impression d'être là pour faire du remplissage que pour démontrer les talents de composition du combo... Dommage. Travaillant sur des ambiances dark/horror, la voix de la demoiselle Scalet se prête à merveille à ce petit jeu, appuyée par des arrangements de claviers simples mais efficaces. Le groupe se paye même le luxe de guests de qualité avec Flegias de NECRODEATH, Dhiloz dANCIENT, Nicholas dENSOPH, Giampaolo de STORMLORD et Bruno Kramm de DAS ICH qui viennent pousser la chansonnette pour un rendu du meilleur effet. Ce dernier a d'ailleurs réalisé un excellent remix du titre "Pleasure and Pain", disponible ici comme titre bonus.
En résumé, THEATRES DES VAMPIRES propose ici un album inconstant mais qui n'est pas pour autant dénué d'intérêt. Sans faire des étincelles, ce "Pleasure and Pain" propose une approche intéressante du style et le groupe a bien fait de recentrer son propos pour offrir une musique plus accessible, plus directe, qui remplira son rôle: vous faire passer un agréable moment.

E' con molta curiosità che mi sono avvicinato al nuovo disco dei gothsters nostrani Theatres Des Vampires soprattutto dopo lo split con lo storico singer nonché fondatore originario della band stessa, Lord Vampyr, e in tutta sincerità sono rimasto soddisfatto dopo l'ascolto di questo nuovo Pleasure And Pain che vede ormai come singer a tutti gli effetti Scarlet prima impegnata esclusivamente con i cori femminili.
Prima di inoltrarci nell'aspetto musicale è giusto quindi soffermarci sulla prestazione vocale di Scarlet che ho trovato per il mio modesto parere molto dinamica, soprattutto per quanto riguarda i continui cambi di registri vocali, una volta aggressivi, sussurrati, in altri frangenti sofferti e per certi versi in alcune occasioni anche con una spiccata attitudine rock che hanno di conseguenza dovuto usufruire anche di un cambio stilistico sul versante musicale, ed è proprio qui che il Teatro dei Vampiri vuole cominciare a riproporre un nuovo e più interessante spettacolo.
Il precedente "Nightbreed Of Macabria" pur essendo un buon disco soffriva di una certa plasticità di fondo del songwriting e dei suoni che rendeva tutto quasi senza anima, come se fosse qualcosa di costruito a tavolino, errore che non ripete questo nuovo disco, dalla produzione decisamente più live e potente, ma che soprattutto va a recuperare quelle atmosfere cupe e funeree che avevano caratterizzato le prime pubblicazione della band. La title track, Rosa Mistero, Forever In Death oltre ad essere degli ottimi esempi di quello che rappresentano odiernamente i Theatres Des Vampires sono un concentrato di malinconia ed energia allo stesso tempo, dalle spiccate melodie e dagli arrangiamenti finalmente adeguati al caso, bellissimi in tal senso i vari giri di tastiera/pianoforte che vanno ad arricchire di molto le composizioni.
Pleasure And Pain pur essendo un ottimo disco risulta anche un album di transizione verso qualcosa di nuovo; "Let Me Die" ad esempio presenta delle bellissime combinazioni di synth e pianoforte che potranno e dovranno essere sfruttate di più in seguito.
Non credo che questo nuovo disco piacerà immediatamente ai fans, anche se in qualche modo si sono recuperate vecchie atmosfere i cambiamenti sono tanti, in primis il nuovo approccio vocale portato da Scarlet, ma sono sicuro che dopo pochi ascolti vi saprà coinvolgere a dovere.
Prima di chiudere vorrei anche segnalare le partecipazioni come guests vocals di Flegias (Necrodeath) e soprattutto il bellissimo contributo di Giampaolo Caprino degli altrettanto grandi Stormlord che in alcuni brani si cimenta in bellissime e profondissime linee vocali che richiamano da vicino i mitici Type O Negative.

E' con molta curiosità che mi sono avvicinato al nuovo disco dei gothsters nostrani Theatres Des Vampires soprattutto dopo lo split con lo storico singer nonché fondatore originario della band stessa, Lord Vampyr, e in tutta sincerità sono rimasto soddisfatto dopo l'ascolto di questo nuovo Pleasure And Pain che vede ormai come singer a tutti gli effetti Scarlet prima impegnata esclusivamente con i cori femminili.
Prima di inoltrarci nell'aspetto musicale è giusto quindi soffermarci sulla prestazione vocale di Scarlet che ho trovato per il mio modesto parere molto dinamica, soprattutto per quanto riguarda i continui cambi di registri vocali, una volta aggressivi, sussurrati, in altri frangenti sofferti e per certi versi in alcune occasioni anche con una spiccata attitudine rock che hanno di conseguenza dovuto usufruire anche di un cambio stilistico sul versante musicale, ed è proprio qui che il Teatro dei Vampiri vuole cominciare a riproporre un nuovo e più interessante spettacolo.
Il precedente "Nightbreed Of Macabria" pur essendo un buon disco soffriva di una certa plasticità di fondo del songwriting e dei suoni che rendeva tutto quasi senza anima, come se fosse qualcosa di costruito a tavolino, errore che non ripete questo nuovo disco, dalla produzione decisamente più live e potente, ma che soprattutto va a recuperare quelle atmosfere cupe e funeree che avevano caratterizzato le prime pubblicazione della band. La title track, Rosa Mistero, Forever In Death oltre ad essere degli ottimi esempi di quello che rappresentano odiernamente i Theatres Des Vampires sono un concentrato di malinconia ed energia allo stesso tempo, dalle spiccate melodie e dagli arrangiamenti finalmente adeguati al caso, bellissimi in tal senso i vari giri di tastiera/pianoforte che vanno ad arricchire di molto le composizioni.

Heute schon gebissen worden? Dann stehen Ihnen die vampirischen Grufties THEATRES DES VAMPIRES mit ihrem siebten Biss "Pleasure And Pain" gerne zur Verfügung. Das Vampir-Image ist geblieben, ansonsten hat sich im Beißertheater so einiges geändert. Die musikalische Entwicklung der Italiener hat sich weiter vom Black Metal hin zum Gothic Metal verschoben. Außerdem ist Sonya Scarlet (Was für ein Name!) nach dem Weggang ihres Co-Sängers Alexander die einzige feste Stimme der Band; sie wird aber gelegentlich von männlichen Gastsängern begleitet.
"Pleasure And Pain" ist eine sehr gediegene und ausgefeilte Platte. Sie zeigt durchweg einen sehr dichten Sound aus Gitarren, Bässen, Tasten und Orchesterklängen. Die Rhythmusgruppe lässt die Mucke weniger nach Metal, sondern eher nach typischem Gruftrock klingen. Sonya gibt dabei mit ihrer vielseitigen und ausdrucksstarken Stimme jedem Stück seine eigene Note. Ihr Gesang ist ohnehin eine große Stärke des Bandsounds, ihre Stimme ist so gut und kräftig, dass sie auch schwierige Partien besteht, ohne dabei zu opernhaft zu wirken. Die Musik hat einen einheitlichen Sound, aber doch hat jedes Lied sein eigenes Gesicht. Mal blitzen in dem schweren Sound akustische Gitarren auf, mal hört man im Hintergrund Chöre. Die Musik hat einen schleppenden Rhythmus ('Rosa Mistero'), dann rockt sie wieder härter ('Forever In Death') oder bietet einen typischen achtziger Grufteindruck ('Reason And Sense'). Beim Bonustrack 'Mater Tenebrarum' ertönen neben der Band gemischte Chöre, düstere Streicher und eine Kirchenorgel, es ist das Aufeinandertreffen von Johann Sebastian Bach und Gothic Rock.
Man muss "Pleasure And Pain" schon mehrmals hören, um die Klasse dieser Platte zu erkennen. Zunächst scheint alles gleich zu klingen, aber dann bemerkt man die Feinheiten. Die Stärke der Band besteht vor allem im detailverliebten Arrangieren der Lieder. Der geneigte Hörer stellt das vor allem an den Unterschieden zwischen der Originalversion und dem Remix des Titelstücks fest. Hier wurde nicht einfach eine Aufnahme durch den Sample-Wolf gedreht.
Wenn die Sonne aufgeht, verschwinden die Vampire samt Beißerchen und Klischees, aber gute Musike bleibt.
