There has to be a way...

Notch EQ is usually a big one. Cheap or cracked cymbals tend to have nasty resonances that have to really be surgical cut up. It's a losing battle though... there are too many variables with overheads. If the source isn't good, all you're doing is damage control.

The real shit is in the fact that not all the cymbals are gonna be the same.
Some of them have that shitty tonality there and the others somewhere else, thats what comes with the cheap crap.
You could probably try to closely mic the crap cymbal up for itself to trigger it.
Kinda wierd, but probably worth a try :D

Try taping the bad cymbals to elimate some nasty ring....

Last project I tracked last week, drummer had terrible cymbals but a great china, so I made him hit the china in like every part :)

Extreme high-cut with an high-class eq (ssl,v-sereies, api blablabla)
some vintage compressor....like the V-comp for oh.

no
no there really isn't
you're fucked.
Unless you have A LOT of time and you can reprogram or cymbal drop... I.e paste in samples of cymbals.

I think triggering would only work for specialty cymbals like china's or splashes that don't really add to the white noise of the overhead sound, where as crashes or high hats need that sustain and blending to sound real. I have no advice for yah haha my overheads sound like SHITE

+1

You can drop in samples and then duck the OHs a bit each time they hit ... might take a bit of experimenting but I've done it before and you really won't notice in the full mix. The trick is to try and get some of the kit sound from other sources .. ie - bleed from an actual snare track, etc ... this way you can keep the OHs lower than normal

example of a rescue mix I did ... when I say these were some of the worst recorded tones I've heard, well, thats what I'm saying :D However, you shouldn't really be able to tell when I put in the cymbal samples

"Cymbal Samples" ... Thats just fun to say out loud, isn't it?

Wouldn't be too difficult to do in Reaper, as Adam has a vid on easily converting audio tracks to MIDI. The velocity info for the MIDI notes is taken from the transients too ie. Small transients equals lower velocity. I haven't tried with overheads though, but so long as there's not too much bleed, you might be alright. Even if you just filter out the kick and try kill the snare & tom bleed as much as you can, you should be alright. I mean, you could just filter the track like a mofo, it could sound like shit once done - but if it gives you the MIDI you need to then trigger SD2.0, then you're most of the way there.
I believe you use PT but if you can't do it there, it might be worth giving Reaper (with Adam's customisations) a shot to get this job done!

I downloaded the Reaper demo, and did all the customisatoins Adam gave us. It looked pretty cool, but i couldn't get the hold of it. I didn't know how to change the tools and stuff like that, so i kind of just left it alone. I really want to know how to do the Audio to Midi though. If you have a link that would be most appreciated.

The track isn't sounding so bad right now, with a lot of notching, saturation and some compression, i think i've got a decent sound out of those cymbals.

Sorry I took so long, I do most of my posting from my iPhone - finally at my laptop! :)
Right, so the tutorial you're looking for is this one: http://www.adamwathan.com/reaper/tutorials/9-DrumToMidiConversion.swf

See this thread for further info: http://www.ultimatemetal.com/forum/...ns-reaper-customizations-pro-tools-users.html

If you still have problems after that, then maybe if you post the overheads, I can give it a shot for you. If that still doesn't work out - if you post a rough mix of the track, I could track the drums on my ekit for you and send you on what you need for the overheads! :)
