This Mortal Coil – It’ll End In Tears
4AD CAD411 1984
By Russell Garwood

“It’ll End In Tears” is the debut album from “This Mortal Coil”, and has to be one of the most depressing albums ever recorded. Ivo Watts-Russell (head of 4AD records) started TMC, a project featuring a diversity of artists (many signed to the 4AD label) and covering some of his favourite songs. This album includes contributions from:
Elizabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins)
Martin McCarrick (Siouxsie and the Banshees)
Lisa Gerrard (Dead Can Dance)
Simon Raymonde (Cocteau Twins)
Robbie Grey (Modern English)
Manuela Rickers (Xmal Deutschland)
Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins)
Gordon Sharp (Cindytalk)
Steven Young (Colourbox)
Howard Devoto (Buzzcocks)
Mark Cox (The Wolfgang Press).
And consists of a both originals and covers.

The sombre opening, “Kangaroo”, written by Alex Chiltern (Big Star) and performed by Gordon Sharp (vocals), Simon Raymonde (bass and guitar) and Martin McGarrick (cello), sets the mood for the rest of the album. Second is a virtually unrecognisable cover of Tim Buckley’s “Song To The Siren” performed by Elisabeth Fraser (vocals), Steven Young (piano), Gini Ball (violin, viola) and Martin McGarrick (cello). Next comes Fyt (an original), with Mark Cox on organ and Martin Young on synthesizer creating an eerie and downbeat soundscape. Other highlights include the haunting “Another Day”, the sheer hopelessness of “Dreams Made Flesh” and the vaguely new wave contrast of “Not Me”.

“It’ll End In Tears”, an extremely impressive debut album, set the precedent that much of the burgeoning 80’s goth and underground scenes aspired to, and is the best TMC album to buy if you are new to the band. Anyone into goth or melancholic music should have this, and it has influenced such a diversity of artists (including Trent Reznor) that many people would find this CD a very welcome addition to their collection.

yep.
this album ia AWESOME but I would recommend BLOOD to those who dont know the band

Nah, IMO Blood isn't as accesible as this - its longer and more abrasive (if you can use it like that :loco: ) I thought It'll end in tears would be a good one to start off with cos its short, all very good and accesible, and IMO is TMC's best album :) :)
