Hi everyone,

this is one of my first post here and I hope to be in the right section.
First of all I wanna thank all of you for this great forum. I know i did not post here but I read a lot and so I learned a lot. So I hope that I could help someone else back.

Here is my request, how I can have this great guitar sound? This is the palm mute section.
I tried different amp and settings but I've never been around this sound...

@2:00
or
@5:04

I'm working with vst plugins, so do you know if there is a way to achieve this sound?

Thank you for your help

Alex

I believe that the sound you're referring to is just a palm mute of a full chord, instead of just the root.

I´d suggest a real amp, a good cab and atleast 1-2 dyn. mics. If you know your ways in shaping good tones, recabinet with some good IR´s will get you in a good region. Also, these guitars are in a "mix", and they´re probably not as beefy as they sound in the mix, since the bass does most of that.
What you are looking after is just a basic power chord chug (doesnt matter if drop or standard tunings). As you can hear in those parts, the bass has alot to do with it.

Thank you to all of you for your response, this is what I thought, a real amp is needed!

What do you mean by a basic power chord? Have to play 3 strings instead of the first two strings?
Sorry I'm french so sometimes it's hard to understand technical terms

Another question about palm mute, when I don't choke the strings after a palm mute to let it resonnate (like in big breaks with china) I haven't a really long sound... I tried to play a lot of different palm mute but it does not sound great.
I play on pod farm with Sturgis preset with my settings anyone one got an idea?
Amp settings? Re-learning how to palm mute?? :loco:

i feel you dude. Had the same "issues" years ago. All i can say is PRACTICE!!!!!!! You are talking about basic Sustain, palm muted in that case. There are many factors that play a huge roll: The guitar (bolt on neck, neck thru). The pick ups (active/passive/low sustain/high sustain). Your tone (low gain/high gain, hard gate/weak gate). The way you palm mute, etc etc etc.

Try to find a nice spot with your picking hand.

And last but not least: Get a tone that´s YOURS.

I agree for my own tone but this is my very first mix (I did some in the past but I learned new technics so i experiment, so I'm trying something that work for the moment.

In fact on real amps I can do palm mute very well, they resonnate etc. but don't know if it's pod farm or what but even with maximum gain I can't have a lot of sustain :/

Hmm.. I could only think of 2 things now: your pick ups, or, your guitar.

Could be wrong ofcourse, but, being an experienced guitarist myself, those are mostly the main factors.

Do you have a multiband-comp on your guitars by any chance? maybe its compressing your lows/low mids too much, and that could ass up to lack of sustain.

My guitar is an LTD EC 1000 with some EMG so could be kind of weird
No multi comp yet as I have not mix it
I ever tried to delete the POD farm noise gate
I play on the norm input maybe PAD is better? As it is active pick up.

I try other amp settings and maybe new palm muting after the week end and i'll tell you
by the way thanks for your help ;)

EDIT: Finally it may seems to be a bit normal, i listen closely to the song I'm learning (a prophecy from Asking Alexandria) and the palm mute aren't sustaining a lot in fact

It's most likely all down to technique man. Amp sims will not resonate the same as a real amp would.

Do you know what PAD function is? As long as you aren't clipping on the way in, you shouldn't have to use it.

Oh ok i thought it was for active pick up but never use it anymore cause i didn't had good sound with it

The PAD will reduce your input signal by a certain amount of dB. Yeah, if you have pickups that are really hot on the way in you may need to use it.

And it "didn't sound good" most likely because it was quieter, and our ears hear louder as better. ;)

Move your palm closer to the back of the guitar, that sounds like a really light palm mute. You just want to dampen the strings slightly.

When doing this, keep your ears open for unwanted string noise/fret noise, the further you go back on the bridge.
A thin sock tied around the headstock damping the strings can help, or weaving a tissue in also works.
