i am loving that my car was overheating when i got back from tour and now the "engine check" light is on possibly ruining my trip to my parents house for my Mom's birthday this weekend.

i really need a digital camera you guys.

go by autozone and get one of those free keys and booklets that have the description of the check engine light codes.

well i think maybe the coolant was low but the car was running fine so i didn't really notice. hopefully i didn't fuck my engine up.

well if it starts again and you can run it w/o your foot on the gas constantly it's still ok but i'd check the coolant BEFORE you start it again dude. def.

yeah i will check the coolant tonight or if its dark i may just leave it till saturday morning and just not drive the rest of the week which i think should be possible.

if the coolant level is okay, it might be the thermostat. sometimes they get stuck.

Check engine light come up pretty much on every occasion it can. it might be nothing or it might be really serious. You really need to check that coolant, DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR without checking it beforehand. With an alluminum head it is very bad to overheat, you might fuck up your motor permanently, your gaskets will blow and you'll have all sorts of troubles.

Yes the thermostat can do that. A faulty sensor can cause the check engine light, anything really.

I'm not sure, but very possibly, if the temp exceeds a certain amt.

what kind of car is it? as minx says thermostats are cheap, although some are super easy to install and some require a bit of effort.

p.s. what mindspell sez is correct. I had a car with an aluminum engine, the head gasket blew, luckily I had a friend who did the work for me pretty much for free which was a huge break, other wise I couldn't find a replacement engine ANYWHERE for less than hundreds.

also most enging check lights have to be turned off by the dealer or something. the one on our honda civic was on all the time but there was nothing wrong with the car at all.

thermostats are so cheap that it would almost make more sense that if the fluid level is okay, replace the thermostat, because its much cheaper than having a mechanic charge you 50 bucks to look at it (at least) and then also charge you for the part.
