Tight guitar tracks- recorded riff by riff?

Also, i record a DI along and after editing all this sh*t together, i reamp with lowered distortion. I've build some very nice boxes to reamp with and that really makes a lot of differences. I get a slightly more clearer sound out of the reamped track just passing tru these gizmos, when the gain is turned down a little this is just right!

Why do you record with higher gain in the first takes, to get the "feeling" right?

Yeah, as someone said... you need to back off the gain if you want to layer 4 tracks.

One interesting question about turning down the gain.
Say you have this great sound and want to record 4 layers of guitars with that sound, but there's too much gain. Would you (Andy) drop the gain by 50% ?
