hey guys, it's time to buy a new amp.
I have been looking at this one:

http://www.thomann.de/gb/marshall_2203.htm

has anyone tried the reissue ones yet? do you guys know if they are any good? I'm looking for a rockish, punkish sound, but will most likely be playing metal with it as well. The amp will solely be for recording.

Hit me up with some comments! I'm gonna test it in a shop soon. Many thanks.

Jesus christ that's a lot of money, and for so little in the way of features - you oughta check out the JVM's if the Marshall sound is what your after, or look for a used 2203

yeah I guess, but this amp has all the features I need if it sounds as good as some marshalls I've heard.

It really seems quite expensive... Out of all the Marshalls i've tried the 2203 has been the best sounding model IMO. I used to own a JMP 2203. I guess it's basically the same but just a different name & a bit different look (smaller logo IIRC). I wonder what the differences are between the different 2203 models (JMP, JCM800 Lead Series, this new reissue JCM800)...

Just throw a tubescreamer in front of it and you're in old school metal heaven :-)

From the clips ive heard on the JVM, you might as well get one of those.
Seriously, you get 4 channels and you can setup 12 sounds that you can switch between with a pedal, and its even cheaper then the 2203.

yeah the 2203kk model is (from as far as i can tell) the same, just with a noise gate and a mid range boost, and the KK version actually retails cheaper in the UK than the standard 2203:

From the official price list:

2203: £1146.00
2203KK: £849.00

I know where my money would be goin if i had to choose!

Jesus I got an original 1982 jcm 800 in original white tolex in awesome condition for less than half that! it was a 50 watter but good look making use of that extra 50 watts! that was a few years ago though and the originals have no effects loops

PM Lasse (LSD STUDIO) or myself, We've got one we might pass on (Verticle input 2203, 100w) that is just awesome!

Way cheaper than that thomann shite...

Plus, i'm in UK so cheapass shipping and it's currently at my house.

2205 works like a charm for me.
a used one would be waaayyyyy cheaper than a new 2203 - got mine for 560 €.
it's not the most popular 800 out there, but for a punkish tone combined with a ts+microamp, this amp is hard to beat.

why do you want 100 watts? 50 might be enough, right?

best,

alex

I'm still having doubts between the 2203 and the JVM, I worry that the JVM doesn't do the 2203 distortion as good, which would be ashame :(

I generally prefer 100 watt or higher amps, because they are (in my opinion) not that much louder than a 50 watt amp and I feel they push more air and have more power overall. You may or may not disagree on that one :)

Trying out the JVM soon, which I had a good 800 to compare it with..

does anybody have experience with the 2203 reissue series? do they sound like the old 800's? or should I really chase after a used 800 if I don't like the JVM?

Well I've used a few 50 watter tube amps for gigging and my marshalls never made it above 5-6 ( then it was insanely loud) and my brothers Laney gh50L rarely makes it above 2! If you think you need those extra 50 watts to get heard then either your playing wacken without a P.A or else your insane!

I'm not saying I need it in volume at all, but I find 100 watt amps sound thicker and fuller, even if they are at the same volume as the 50 watt amp, that's what I am trying to say.
