Hey guys,

I've found a Marshall combo on a local listing here. The seller describes it as a Marshall JMP from 1978, also known as 2203. It has a master volume and 2x Celestion Blackback 12" speakers. I'm gonna call him tomorrow. Do any of you guys have experience with it, or is there anyone who can tell me more about the amp? I'm googling around, but there are a few guys on this forum that know a lot more about Marshalls than me. I've been GAS'ing for an 800 for ages now, if this is really a well regarded vintage 2203 I'm buying it tomorrow.

The model 2204 is the 100 watt version of the 800. Master volume, 2 input jacks, no reverb or trem. 2204 is the 50 watter. I'm not familiar with the combo version though. Probably open back. My friend had a modded Princeton with an old blackback and open back that got some really mean tones. But, it is a gamble.

The 4 input plexi style non-master vol amps are Model 1959 for 100 watt and Model 1987 for 50 watt.

Good luck dude.

Yeah, I've googled around a bit and found out that it's the 100W version with master volume. No idea about the cab, I'll have to try it out. But as far as I've found the amp section is identical between the combos and the heads. I hope it isn't sold, it's 3:43 AM here. Gonna call the seller first thing in the morning :)

He still has it, I'm going to check it out later this week. If all goes well I'm getting a mint '78 2203 combo for 650 euros :D

Typo fixed... ;)

B36arin - FWIW - Here's the model numbers for the Marshall combos:

4010 (50 watts, 1x12, combo version of 2204 head)
4103 (100 watts, 2x12, combo version of 2203 head)
4104 (50 watts, 2x12, combo version of 2204 head)
4210 (channel switching, 50 watts, 1x12, combo version of 2205 head)
4211 (split channel, 100 watts, 2x12, combo version of 2210 head)
4212 (split channel, 50 watts, 2x12, combo version of 2205 head)

What you're describing sounds like the 4103.

I'm actually pretty sure that it's a 2103. The 4103 seems to be the combo version of the JCM 800 2203, but this is a JMP which precedes the JCM800.

So did you get it??? Those Blackbacks most likely sound amazing...

Yeah, I picked it up yesterday. Looks brand new and sounds absolutely amazing, I'm absolutely stoked!! It's currently in my band's rehearsal space, I'll upload pics and maybe a clip or two when I get it over to the studio. I tried running it through my Recto 4x12", and my first impression was that I strongly preferred the Blackbacks. Looking forward to putting a mic on them!
