In the states, you can file for unemployment benefits if you have been layed off. not fired.
Because you boss said, "We have to let you go," in stead of saying, "you're fired," you probably qualify for benefits. File your claim sooner rather than later and follow up on it. If you don't get your benefits in a reasonable amount of time, contact your House Representative. It's part of his/her job to see that the needs of the citizens are being addressed.

This is exactly why i didn't get a job when i got an academic year off since last november (to the next sep), coz school and job here engulf you to the point where you don't see anything but them in the whole world ! you work all day long and when u go back home you just want to sleep !! no time for anything else. I've been learning a lot of stuff ever since i quit but I do need money to buy drum kits or a new guitar !!!! but it's fine, peace of mind is better than anything else in the whole fucking world

Yeah, to add to some of the other comments, in the US, they can fire you (let you go) for no reason, but they can't fire you for a reason. It's really all warped.

Yeah, that's why I want to become a professional online poker player, so I can just spend a few hours a week playing poker to make money and I can use the rest of my time for something more productive. Hell, I'll even keep my current job as part time since I don't mind it and I like the people.

for my part, im finding a job since i finish my carrer (i got programmer 6 months ago) and nothing!!! ( im 21 years old).
the stupid employers dont give me jobs because i dont have exp in informatic works( i never worked whit a contract but i do practices and small works) plus this global recesion is a lot more hard get a job
